COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Black Maria is an American inspired Black IPA. It is black as an stout and hoppy as an IPA. The beer has been brewed with a good amount of highly roasted Carafa Malts, but with a relatively low amount of caramel and chocolate malts. This way we get the burned bitter and delicate chocolate notes in the beers, that goes well with the bitter and fruity aromas of the hops. The lack of caramel and chocolate results in less residual sweetness that you normally pick up from an Stout. For the hops we wanted some hops that could stand up against the Carafa malts. Therefore we used a mix of Columbus, Centennial, Galaxy and Cascade for the hop profile.

Trocken, wenig herb, vollmundig. 12/12/11/12/11/12

Aroma has oaty tones, some resin and mellow roastiness. Flavour has resiny tones, roastiness, some grapefruit and mellow herbal bitterness. Malty palate. The finish is a bit too harsh here.

Bottled 330ml. -from Svijet Piva Zagreb. Deep black coloured, medium sized brown head, hops in the nose. Roasted malt, citrusy hoppy, dark chocolate and alcohol with strong hop bitterness in the finish and aftertaste. Expected better.

Gluepot (101) - Ontario, CANADA - MAR 18, 2015
Another great dark and hoppy IPA from TO OL. Nose is of grapefruit hops, licorice and roasted malt. The taste profile is complex and complementary - bitter chocolate, roasted malt, licorice, earthy and fruity bitterness, brown sugar and cherries are featured. The body is thick for a black IPA . The aftertaste is even and balanced. Very well crafted.

Beautiful black, almost pitch, nice medium lasting tan head with small bubbles. Aroma is of chocolate, roasted malts and grapefruit and hop pellets. Taste is medium low on malt and chocolate sweetness and heavy on the dark chocolate and roasted charcoal bitterness with citrus and hops in the finish. The hops are not as strong as one would hope, stronger in the aroma than in taste. Dry, bitter lasting aftertaste. Medium to full bodied and oily.

There are two kinds of black IPA: the "stouty" roasted ones (known as India Pale Porters) and the just black-colored ones. Black Maria is just in the middle between them. The aroma is intense, grassy, herbal, resiny, spicy but with roasted biting hints. The freshness of a pine wood mixed to the tropical warmth of the chocolate, liquorice and coffee in a very good balance. This beer is so good and To l one of my favourite breweries. I just love their beers. P.S. Maybe i used the word "just" too many times. Just forgive me. Im just an italian guy. My english is so bad.

Pours black with a tan head. Aromas of malty, coffe, pine and hops. Taste is heavier on the malt than the hops, but citrus flavours come through, and the finish is bitter and malty. Doesnt taste like 8.1%. Really interesting beer.
