Black Maria is an American inspired Black IPA. It is black as an stout and hoppy as an IPA. The beer has been brewed with a good amount of highly roasted Carafa Malts, but with a relatively low amount of caramel and chocolate malts. This way we get the burned bitter and delicate chocolate notes in the beers, that goes well with the bitter and fruity aromas of the hops. The lack of caramel and chocolate results in less residual sweetness that you normally pick up from an Stout. For the hops we wanted some hops that could stand up against the Carafa malts. Therefore we used a mix of Columbus, Centennial, Galaxy and Cascade for the hop profile.

Black with small tan head. Aroma of citrus and licorice. Sweetish roasted licorice flavour with citrus hops and a good bitterness. The licorice-citrus combo is to the point for the "style"

330 ml. bottle @ home. BBF 19/01/2018. Colour is in between very dark brown & black, big disappearing mocha bubbles. Nice lacing. Nose is light blue cheese hops, rich coffee roast, light citrus hops, nice mix of blue cheese hops & sweet coffee. Taste is strong bitterness, bitter coffee roast, touch liquorish, light bark, charcoal, leading into a bitter citrus peel finish, lots of citrus peel, grapefruit & lemon peel, strong roast, lightly mineral, ashes, charcoal, light lingering bitter ashy aftertaste, scorched earth,… Thick citrus peel, burned coffee bitterness lingering. Bitterness is strong & lingering here. Could have been more like the nose & less like scorched earth as far as the taste goes,… Still very interesting & good. Carb. Is a touch too high for me. Almost touch thin. Very dry. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LjHey6j7Evs

Bottle 33cl, a dark beer with huge brown head. Nose is very hops on hops resin, apricot and mango. Aroma is on roasted malt, sweet caramel, hops resin, quite bitter, not too sweet, dark chocolate good balance between the roasted / licorice and the fresh fruits / resin. Alcohol well hidden, intense resinous finish with licorice notes.

375mL bottle picked up at Lueken’s pours with a nice dark body that supports a light colored mocha head of foam. The aroma offers up spicy noble hops, spicy black licorice, a faint citrus note, spicy woodiness, a mineral sensation, chocolate and faint burnt toast. The taste delivers a smooth mouth feel that fills up with spicy hops, some resiny pine hops, spicy black licorice and then a good dose of dark roasted to burnt malts. Off in the background amid a thicket of spicy licorice lurks a thin murmur of dark fruity esters. Very nice brew.

0.33 bottle bought at Svijet piva, Zagreb. Shared with Anja and Dražen in the park. Almost completely black with creamy brown head. I’m probably wrong, but there seems to be something wrong with this bottle. I felt chlorophenol in the aroma so I’m not sure about rating this. Other notes were chocolate, dry taste, some bitterness that lingers. Not sure how to rate it.
