We bring to you an black thick milk stout called By Udder Means. We wanted to do a stout, that had a thick mouth feel and still a low alcohol percentage. We obtained this by adding a solid amount of lactose in the beer. The yeast strain we used is not capable of fermenting lactose, so when the beer stops fermenting all lactose still remains in the beer. At the same time lactose doesn’t leave this sweet touch to the beer, so you can obtain a thick mouth feel without having an overly sweet or overly strong stout. We hope you enjoy.

200ml, tap, last one during a long drinking afternoon with Skinnyviking at Mikkeller & Friends. Tan-coloured, bubbly ring to the edge of the glass. Jet black body. Malty sweet nose offset by leafy hops. Dark fruity taste character, roasted malts added by a punch of citrus shells. Lasting bittersweet tail. Well-made stout, not too sweet (Copenhagen, 22.05.2013).

33 cl bottle @ lusikka, BBE 08.01.2018
Aroma is rather nice with lots of fruity hops, some gooseberry bush and hints of nettles. Also some roasted notes and hints of ash behind the hop wall. Flavour is rather hoppy with fruity notes, pineapples, gooseberry bush and some roasted notes. Sweet stout? A black IPA this is.

33 cl bottle. BBE 08.01.2018.
Pours dark brown color with a small beige head. Aroma of citric hops, some fruits, dark roasted malts and some chocolate notes. Flavor of fruits, resiny hop notes, roasted malts. More like a black ipa than sweet stout.

330 ml bottle.
Pours a black colour with a beige head. Aroma of roasted malts, really strong and pungent Citra hops and caramel. Flavour of strong roasted malts, CItra hops, grass, salty licorice and chocolate. Medium bodied, thick mouthfeel and a lingering bitter finish with a citrusy bite. Doesn’t feel like a sweet stout really, more like a Black IPA. And a good one it is.

330ml bottle from Bierkompass

BBE 08/01/18 - Pours pitch black with a brown head. Massive amount of hops in the aroma, notes of roasted malts, citrus, grainy notes and hints of licorice. Taste is hoppy, roasty and sweetish with notes of milky chocolate. Finish is hoppy, fruity, lactic and roasty with notes of sweet chocolate. Quite hoppy stout, almost feels like an Black IPA.

Botella.

Brouwerij (894) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - MAY 27, 2013
Bottle. Pours very dark brown with fine light brown head. Decent retention with thin sheets of lacing. Aroma is hoppy, bitter, grassy, lactic, funky cheese. Flavor is hoppy, bitter and resinous up front, followed by roasted malt, burnt malt, coffee, bitter with a creamy, milk stout background. There is a funky, mildly sour flavor I can’t put my finger on, the beer just smells and tastes a little off. Liked it significantly more as it warmed. Moderate carbonation, medium to full body, and smooth texture. A unique milk stout that is dominated by roasted and hoppy, bitter tones. Not my favorite.
