The great warrior of Gath. The mighty champion of the Philistines. Embedded in ancient folklore and religion. Coming from the World of Old. His size and stature is not human. He is bigger. The armor of Goliat is black. Creamy black lacings. Stands with a towering height. He can grab elements from both earth and heaven. Earthy, roasted, notes from the earth. Warming, pungent, sweet notes from the skies. His heart is beating slowly, almost endlessly slow. This man is thought to be invincible!

Ingredients: Water, barley malt, roasted barley, dark cassonade sugar, flaked oats, hops, gourmet coffee and yeast.

Bottle. Pours dark brown, pretty much black with a medium-sized, dark mocha colored head. Aroma is a huge whiff of tobacco and cigar, very ashy. Some roast and light chocolate and coffee as well. But cigar and ash dominate. Taste is quite roasty and ashy, the tobacco lingers in the background along with a dab of soy sauce. Some liquorice, salty and otherwise, a bit of coffee. Some grapefruit in the finish. Fairly high carbonation, quite full.

My Bottom Line:
The acidic fruitiness in the second half of this Coffee Imperial Stout lightens an otherwise rich mouthfeel, but also tends to take away from the pleasure to be had from the dessert coffee flavors and meddling roast.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam tops the pitch black.
-Alcohol vapors are found, but are never bothersome.
-Small bubbles and slick residual sugars make for contemplative sipping.
-The acidic finish increases drinkabilty, but is a tad too prominent for my liking in these dessert brews.

Bottle @ home thx to benzai. Pitch black colour with a medium sized, light brown head. Smells hops, roasty, coffee, chocolate.. Nice. Tastes sweet, very roasty, coffee, chocolate, whipped cream, slightly hoppy. Nice! Full body, soft carbo, thick texture.

Bottle. Pours black with a tall, dense cafe-creme coloured head. Aroma is devastating. Freshly percolated coffee and burnt toast. Fittingly drunk in the morning. Flavour has delicious coffee from beginning to end with a persistent drying bitterness from the roast malt and a bit of woody, pipesmoke. Immediately warming from the alcohol and more and more flavoursome as I continue to drink it. Delicious and complex. Perfect beer for rate number 1500.

Beautiful coffee aroma, very well integrated into the stout aroma. Initially, this was a clear 8, but as it became less cold, the alcohol did start to appear, whic is a shame. Looks great - black, with a dark keggy head. Smooth and sweet in the palate, coats the mouth, prickly carbonation. Huge burnt roast, quite astringent. Some estery spikes in the retronasals. In the finish there’s an ashy mineral from the burntness that’s very drying. Some twiglets in the mouth (i.e. marmite). Late finish is more back to the coffee again, but it’s overstewed and thin. Harsh, and a bit unbalanced, an almost caustic bite. Upside - the alcohol is hidden under the "bolder" elements. Leaves me wanting an Uzavas Gaisais or something else designed for drinkers rather than tickers. A shame, as the aroma was lovely. And after my BGB experience 2 weeks back, I’m provably not prejudiced against slamming multiple impies, if they’re the right impies. Things can change, I’ll definitely try to grab another sip from lower down the keg or another keg another time. As my ’+++’ indicates, there’s every opportunity for me to give this more points, but I have to call it as it is in the glass in front of me.

UPDATED: NOV 8, 2014 Bottle 37,5 cl @ home. Pours black with firm small/medium head. Intense aroma, which mostly consists of coffee, but I’m picking up chocolate as well. Nice. Tastes intense coffee. Sugar, roasted malt and chocolates also. Bit sweet, in a positive way. Excellent Stout.
