"Heaven knows no frontiers, and I’ve seen heaven in your eyes"

This is how the Frontier beer series lost their ground, missed direction and finally found themselves again. This beer has no frontiers, meaning that it can now pick and choose among brewing specialties. Instead of being an IPA, this is a rather a Belgian ale, hopped and dryhopped with continental european hops and refermented with brettanomyces. A tart, picturesque and rural beer.

Ingredients: Water, barley malt, hops, Rock Candy, yeast and brettanomyces.

Tap at Churchill’s in San Marcos. Clear amber pour with weak foam. Old red apple nose. Taste is not good, papery/flat red apple juice. Something when wrong.

Light haze on this amber beer, big fluffy cream coloured head. Palate is light, semi dry and a little crispy. Minerally malt, dry. A little pine and sublte fruit salad sweets. Finishes dry with hoppy citric bitterness. A mixed bag, but quite drinkable.

tap @ novare, portland. hazy dark golden with a frothy and rocky off-white head, good retention and lacing. fruity - apricots and citrus, caramel, brett dryness, earthiness, very spicy, red grapes, some bubblegum and belgian candi, floral, herbal and grassy medium hopping. lively carbonation, hint of acidity and sweetness, light body - oily, very nice grassy-spicy finish. this is very nice stuff.

750ml served in an Orval chalice. A - Pours a hazy orange/amber with a bright white head that blankets the sides of the glass forming a thin cap. S - Grassy, raw floral aroma, very mild spice, faint sweet malt, pineapple/orange. T - Sweet pale malt, herbal and pine hops rush in, spicy in the middle, earthy tropical fruit backdrop, pineapple mostly, the brett is subtle and earthy while the hops seem to be front and center. The finish is dry and refreshing. M - Moderate but soft carbonation, medium full body, dry finish. Nice to see some hops in a Belgian IPA. The hop profile is rugged and green with notes of floral and mixes well with the subtle earthy brett yeast. Some mild tropical fruit mixed in with a dry finish and then you exhale with satisfaction. Good stuff here except for the weak nose. Was hoping for more brett character but after tasting it I’m fine with it. A nice rustic BIPA. Serving type: bottle 12-16-2012

Pours a deep rusty brown color with a finger of eggshell foam. The nose has a bit of rubber, leather, brett funk, grass and toffee. The palate follows but to me this beer reads as a english bitter with brett. A big malty toffee sweet almost buttery base which is made more complex by the addition of a heavy brux brett strain that has its moments of nice flavor but also goes over the plastic phenol edge here and there as well.

on tap at alewife, part of beers gone wild event. slightly hazy staw yellow color, not much head, nice yeast esters, brett apparent in the nose. fairly light, refreshing body. kind of reminds me of a rustic saison. the brett character in the beer’s flavor is nicely done, not one dimensional, not overly complex, either.

There’s a lot going on here but it’s all pretty subtle. Floral and citrus hop, Belgian yeast funk, sweet caramel, and a tart finish. If everything was turned up a notch it would really be amazing.
