Shared bottle @ Cardinal, Stavanger. Pours brown with huge off-white head. Aroma of smoked malt. Some sweetness and sourness, might be infected. Beer was overcarbonated.

UPDATED: MAY 29, 2015 330 ml bottle, batch 104, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 5.5%. Dark brown colour, moderate beige head. Fairly strong aroma of alder wood smoked stjørdalsmalt, smoked meat and smoked fish. Medium dry flavour, strong notes of stjørdalsmalt, despite this smoked malt allegedly being only a minor part of the grist. Not my cup of tea.

330mL bottle at Cafe Ni Muser, pours a deep dark brown brown with an amber tinge and a tiny head. Nose brings out lightly smoked ash and light roast. Flavour is ashy and smoky, with lightly roasted caramel malt. Well-constructed and balanced but nothing overly impressive. Decent.

Bergen 050914. Dark brown colour with a beige head. Aroma is sourness, smoked, citrus, malt. Flavour is sourness, malt, smoked, citrus, chocolate, yeast. Weird beer in a nice way.

330 ml bottle. Dark brown body with a small, dense, lacing brown head. Strong and promising aroma smoked malt, smoked meat and peat. Flavor is sweet, acidic, burnt malt, smoke, liquorice and quite sour. I don’t’ find the flavor balanced at all, for me it’s just a sweet and acidic mess with bonfire and peat. Medium body and strong in aftertaste. Not my kind of beer.

Pours close to black with little to no head. Smoke and peat on the nose, with dried ham, liquorice and tar. Taste is slightly sour with moderate smoke and liquorice. Body is medium and co2 levels are soft.

33cl bottle from Vinmonopolet. Pours dark brown with a beige head. Smoky aroma with wooden notes, malt, sour berries, peat and hints of tar and grapefruits. Smoky, quite sour and wooden with earthy and vinous notes. Certainly a lot going on here, but not quite my thing. The smokiness is nice, but doesn’t go so well with the more sour and acidic notes for me. Interesting enough!

My Bottom Line:
Wooden smoke gets overtaken by acidic grapefruit, two powerfully disharmonious components which sadly fight from aroma to finish.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A ring of foam circles the dark brown.
-Malt character and depth is not in display at all here.
-The acrid fruitiness gets quickly unnerving.
-Drinkability is obviously very poor.
-This is far cry from the other Stjørdalsøl or Maltøl I’ve tried (Granas, Storli, Klostergarden).
-I had high hopes for this one, but alas, this batch is clearly infected.
