3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 14/20
Italian take on the new ’black IPA’ style, with Australian Galaxy hops. Very thick and creamy, beige, dense head, gushing; colour an inky black. Aroma of cold coffee, bitter chocolate, ashes, soy sauce, walnuts, sherry, minerals. Taste lightly sourish at first, only a very vague fruit sweetishness, strong carbonation as expected seen the gushing, deep bitter chocolatey and nutty maltiness, mouth-lining roasted bitterness, very coffee-like, as well as an assertive, peppery hops bitterness, long finish. In all, a very typical and well-made example of its style.

Bottle, 75cl, at Melkebaren. It pours a big beige head over a very dark brown body. Some curtains. The aroma is lightly roasted, with a nice piney and fruity, faintly grassy hoppiness. Some Belgian style yeasty notes. It’s dry on the palate, with some malty sweetness. Pleasant carbonation level. Some licorice on the flavor, which is quite roasted, with a nice bitterness. Some dark chocolate and coffee, and some piney hops. Lasting bitter finish. Not your average Black IPA, but it’s nice anyway. Tasteful and moreish. 140727

from Erzbierschof - hazy brown beer with persistent beige foam; nice lacework; toasted aroma of cookie, hazelnuts and coffee; pretty hoppy (mainly spicy); a good malt backbone, creamy palate, very bitter, earthy and toasted biscuity finish - tasty and hoppy, a good beer

Wow. Huge beer that drinks like a hoppy imperial stout. The hops are really leafy and green and the chocolate malt body is a delight. Highly skillful.

Keg at PSBH, Manchester. Black with thin tan head. Zingy citrus candy, red fruit, liquorice hints from the malt. Big bitter bite. Definitely the most interesting hop experience I’ve had in some time. Carb is a bit high. Good stuff, sticks to the black IPA formula but these galaxy hops clearly give it something unique.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
On tap @ Goodbeer Faucets, Shibuya. Pours pitch black with a small foam head - that is leaving a beautiful lacing on the glass. Aroma - first it feels like a bubble bath, sweet and candy-like, lively. Later roast malt profile emerges with some hop freshness. Taste is like a proper black IPA should have - it has a good balance of roast malt bitterness, bitter chocolate and molasses - balanced with fragrant hopped bitterness. Some pine needles and even a bit resiny. Nicely balanced and very well made. Great beer to sip, it took me an hour to finish a pint.

Tap at Port Street Beer House, Manchester. Dark brown. Thick, bubbly, tan head. Flora. Light herb. Leathery maltiness. Hint of black fruit. Taste is light cocoa dry. Light bitterness. Very nice, although a bit too much carbonation.
