37,5cl bottle at home. Nicely looking bottle, dark green with a beautifully decorated label. Pours a deep brownish red colour, no head just some bubbles. Complex aroma and taste with chestnut, sweet red dessert wine, dried fruits like figs, plums and raisins, ginger, roasted carameland sugary malts, vanilla cask, boozy alcoholic warmth, slight astringency. Aftertaste is lingering sweet, boozy and dry. Low carbonation, big body, oily mouthfeel. If there’s one downside it’s the missing malty backbone that would make it more an ale than a wine.

My Bottom Line:
This Barrel-Aged Barley Wine is the setting for caramelized prunes, controlled oxidation, wood, red wine and hazelnuts in a luxurious body.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-There is barely any head atop the misty dark red.
-Carbonation is very low, but it works with the deeply caramelized malts.
-This can probably age with the best of them.
-Had this next to some 7 to 11-year old Thomas Hardy’s and it wasn’t fazed at all.

Bottle, at Haand Festival -14. A hazy brown beer topped by a small, dense, beige head. The aroma is vinous, with dried fruits, brown sugar, prunes and some roasted malts. Some bitterness and a faint touch of dark chocolate in the flavor, as well as the dried fruits, blue plums and brown sugar found in the aroma. Vinous, full-bodied, warming and nicely carbonated. Lasting finish. Overall, too warming, but sure a nice one. 140523
