This award winning doppelbock (8.2% alcohol by volume) lager is brewed with a generous supply of Munich, carapils, caramel and chocolate malts and is fermented with Bavarian lager yeast. The resulting caramel sweetness and rich mouthfeel are complimented by the mild bittering of German Hallertau hops. 1997 Great American Beer Festival Silver Medal Winner

UPDATED: FEB 3, 2003 Deep orange/brown with little head. Smells fruity and a bit sweet. Spicy with definite caramel and maple flavors, along with some fruitiness. Not much malt presence, although the beer is quite sweet. Not bad overall, but a tad sweet.

nice doppel - 8.2 is not noticable, maple sweet, bitter without the heavy aftertaste of some from this style

aroma was very fruity and with strong sugar presence. the head was very thin and the color was clear red color. the flavor full with a very strong bitter after taste. not what i’d sit down to on a saturday evening.

Ruby/brown color. Palate was thinner than expected. Malts were sweet and caramel but gathered a sour/toffee as it warmed that became a bit cloying. middle of the road double bock

My favorite from the variety pack. Nice balance. A well-rounded dobbelbock. I wish I could find more.

Draught. Body is dark amber. Aroma is moderately hoppy (grapefruit), lightly malty (caramel, cookie). Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is moderately acidic, lightly sweet, moderately bitter. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation, lightly alcoholic. Despite the brewery’s deScription, I still find lots of grapefruit and not so much malt in the nose...dunno where the Hallertauer is, but I always wish I could find it.

There is a lot to like in this. If I hadn’t seen the stupid label and name for this beer (in a blind tasting), I would have thought it possibly a Belgian (in the vein of a Chimay Rouge)--malty, but with a hint at fruitiness at first blush, excellent aroma, warming but not as boldly alcoholic as an English strong ale. The body faded a bit quicker than desired, but on the whole, this was enjoyable. The biggest offense was the build-up for sweetness that started to clog my throat.

Dark amber color, medium head. Nice malty flavor, some roasted malt flavor, slightly sweet. Nice smooth taste, full flavor. Mouthfeel is round. Finish is clean. Aftertaste is slightly bitter, mostly malty.

Strong roasty impression tops deep red color. Presents a sour aftertaste.

Dark copper/brown color. Head was thin. Aroma of sweet malt. Passable. Lacks any real depth. Sorta like my wife.
