Hop Strike! is a dry-hopped Black Rye-IPA built from the ground up at Tommyknocker Brewery. This beer is characterized by an intermingling of spicy citrus hops and chocolate malt creating an interesting complexity and great first impression on the nose. Hop Strike’s substantial 95 IBUs are balanced by the chocolate rye resulting in a nice depth of malt character and deep color.
Appearance: Deep Brown/Black, light tan head
Malts: Idaho Pale Malt, European Crystal, Chocolate malt and Chocolate rye
Hops: Chinook, Newport, Glacier, Nugget and Summit
Dry-hopped with 40 pounds of hops, 16 deg. Plato, 78 IBUs, 45 SRM, 7% ABV

Poured into a wide flute glass. Dark brown with a reddish hue and a two inch dirty white head that quickly fells to a quarter inch. Smells of rich roasted malt, a little chocolate and some citrus. Very pleasant. Unfortunately the taste does not follow the smell. Watery, light roasted malt and a little burnt malt. There is some citrus bitterness and a touch of rye spice. It is too subtle. Light body, moderate carbonation. It is the first black rye IPA I have come across and I like it for that. I wish it had some more flavor to it, more rye or malt, either one would work well.

This is easily one of the best Tommyknocker beers I’ve had. For a Black IPA, its about middle of the road. Nice roasted aroma, some astringency at the end but mostly a pleasant grass aroma and pine flavor.

355ml bottle. Pours a dark mahogany, with a beige head. Roasted, nutty aroma, chocolate, hops, coffee, toffee. Off-dry, medium to full bodied, mid to high bitterness, balanced CO2. Roasted, nutty taste, quite hoppy, chocolate, toffee, spruce, earth. More like a well hopped porter, than a proper BIPA. Enjoyable, even so. (2013-04-22)

bottle. Poured opaque brown with a large tan head. Malty nose with a touch of citrusy hops. Slick texture with tight carbonation, finishes dry. Roasted chocolate malt flavour with a spicy oaky quality, and piney hops.

Bottle pours an opaque black with a medium tan head. Aromas of caramel and hops. Taste is dark malt, hops, hints of stout characters: chocolate and coffee. Bitter and not as alcoholic as I would expect.

This was a nice solid black IPA. Really enjoyed the thickness and the aromatics. Lots of bitter on the tongue.
