3.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 Fatehunter (793) - Corbett, Oregon, USA - MAY 30, 2012Poured into a wide flute glass. Dark brown with a reddish hue and a two inch dirty white head that quickly fells to a quarter inch.
Smells of rich roasted malt, a little chocolate and some citrus. Very pleasant.
Unfortunately the taste does not follow the smell. Watery, light roasted malt and a little burnt malt. There is some citrus bitterness and a touch of rye spice. It is too subtle.
Light body, moderate carbonation.
It is the first black rye IPA I have come across and I like it for that. I wish it had some more flavor to it, more rye or malt, either one would work well.
4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20 ads135 (1728) - Lawrence, Kansas, USA - JUN 18, 2013
This is easily one of the best Tommyknocker beers I’ve had. For a Black IPA, its about middle of the road. Nice roasted aroma, some astringency at the end but mostly a pleasant grass aroma and pine flavor.
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20 TheJestersBeer (1703) - SWEDEN - MAY 27, 2013
355ml bottle.
Pours a dark mahogany, with a beige head.
Roasted, nutty aroma, chocolate, hops, coffee, toffee.
Off-dry, medium to full bodied, mid to high bitterness, balanced CO2.
Roasted, nutty taste, quite hoppy, chocolate, toffee, spruce, earth.
More like a well hopped porter, than a proper BIPA. Enjoyable, even so. (2013-04-22)

This was a nice solid black IPA. Really enjoyed the thickness and the aromatics. Lots of bitter on the tongue.
