Piney hops on the nose, with some roasted aromas. Pours very dark brown with no head. Piney hops upfront with resinous hops dominating with some roasted flavors. Not bad.

12oz bottle. Poured a dark brown color, medium sized off-white head. Aroma was roasted bitterness, with a touch of earthy hops. Flavor was burnt grain, with some toasted elements, okay.

THOUGHTS: Decent black IPA. The rye ads a new dimension, but I’ve had plenty better. TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a very dark brown that was basically black in the glass with red highlights and a small, off-white head that mostly diminished and left good lacing. The aroma had moderate to heavy grain and roasted malts; lighter chocolate and rye; hints of coffee; light piney hops; spicy rye; and something off. The initial flavor was light to mod sweet, lightly acidic and lightly bitter; while the finish was moderately sweet, light to mod bitter and lightly acidic. There was roasted malt, a little chocolate, hints of coffee, grain, spicy rye, citrus hops, a little piney hops, and tobacco. The medium body was sort of oily with very fizzy carbonation and a slightly metallic, slightly chalky and lightly astringent finish.

Bottled. Dark pour. Fair amount of head. Gravitates more herbal/grainy on the Black IPA scale than malt/roast/chocolate/coffee.

Draft. Pours dark brown/amber with a medium beige head. Didn’t know this style existed until tonight. Aroma is odd: chocolate malt and floral, citrus hops. Flavor is roasted malt and fairly hoppy. Good, but hard to compute.
