Bottle - 6.5% ABV on the label. Black pour with a short, foamy tan head. Aroma is strong pine and citrus atop roasted malt. Taste is also big pine, citrus fruit, roasted malt, coffee notes and floral notes. Not much of the rye is coming through. Body is medium with a soft, bubbly carbonation. Ends with more pine, citrus, hop oils, floral hops, chocolate, roasted malt and coffee.

Shaker pint draft at some bar in River Run village, Keystone, Colorado. The pour is black, touches of brown, and a one inch light khaki head. The aroma is caramel sweet malt, light roast and pine hops. The taste is sweet caramel malt, shows a touch of chocolate, light touch of roast, and the pine hops throughout. The palate is medium bodied, active carbonation and a decently dry finish. Nice beer on a sunny day.

Bottle from andersons in toledo. Deep brown pour with a finger or so tan head. Aroma is toasty caramel, herbal hops. Tastes of toast, brown sugar and pine hops. Malt comes through in slightly dry finish. Medium to light palate. Pretty good - not blown away by all these new black ipa’s so far.

glennmastrange (1888) - hobe sound, Florida, USA - AUG 23, 2011
Bottle. Moderate toasted, verging on burnt grain for the malt, resin for the hops, light leather for the yeast, with background notes of pepper and a littlebrown sugar. Head is small, frothy, light tan with some spotty lacing and is mostly diminishing. Color is clear dark brown with a red tint. Flavor starts slightly sweet and lightly acidic, then finishes lightly to moderately bitter. Palate is medium, watery with a soft carbonation and a lightly astringent finish. Very nice aromas, unfortunately all the other aspects has this beer falling short of a really good Black IPA.

Bottle at Butters’ Slutfest: Charred oak and coffee (medium roast) nose. Garnet brown, thin head. Coffee flavor, not strong, not hoppy. Light body, coffee finish. Good beer, IPA fail.

Very sweet, full grains, OK roast, and hops in good balance. Finish almost coffee-like. Not too hot, pretty drinkable. Liked it, even though it was a little too sweet.

On tap. Pours with a hazed brown body and a small off-white head that produces good lace. Big roasted aroma, coffee, molasses, lightly green and fruity. Flavors are bitter, herbal, roast, sesame seeds, chocolate and a bit astringent. Roast forward. Medium to light carbonation.

Draft at The Bridge. Pours a flat cola brown color with a small off white head that leaves spots of lace in the glass. Aroma of roasted malts, piney hops, earth, brown sugar, and vegetal notes. Flavor of roasted malts, orange peel, earthy hops, char, toasted sugar, and just a hint of rye. The rye really wouldn’t jump out if you didn’t already know it was supposedly in there. Light-medium bodied, with a roasty, bitter mouthfeel and low-moderate carbonation. Not bad.
