I poured a 12oz bottle into a tulip glass. It had a best before date of 1/27/14 and cost $2.99 ($0.25 per ounce).

Appearance: Murky, brown hue (almost deep purple). No visible carbonation. Pours to a small, white, creamy head which mostly dissipates and leaves minor lacing on the glass.

Smell: Light notes of molasses and dark malt. None of the usual pumpkin ale spices.

Taste: I tend to like pumpkin beers, and the ones I donít like are usually due to their use of an odd spice palette. While Tommyknocker Small Patch Pumpkin Harvest Ale doesnít have the flavor combinations I prefer in a beer of the style, the reason Iím scoring it so poorly is because itís so overtly bland. For a beer made with what should be flavorful ingredients, it manages to be quite dull.

The first thing I noticed about this beer was how much it reminded me of a British pub-style brew. The body was overtly light, with a slightly creamy taste, but at the same time still quite mild. The breweryís website describes it as a brown ale base brew, but it seems to be lacking the sweet maltiness of that style. In fact, itís difficult to pick out the flavors actually present here. Some molasses, yes, but without any of the sweetness. A hint of nutmeg as well, but no pie or rustic potpourri-like character, either. Slight bitterness on the back end, but itís kind of pointless. More of a boring beer than a bad one, but definitely not a good one.

Drinkability: While I wouldnít quite consider Tommyknocker Small Patch Pumpkin Harvest Ale to be repulsive-tasting, I have to admit I enjoyed the drinking process. The mouthfeel is smooth and soft which makes it comfortable and easy to drink. Itís also rather watery, which is a bit annoying. Though rather light at 5% ABV, itís still disappointing the flavor levels are so low which prevents it from being truly sessionable.

Not very good. Pumpkin beers are obviously very hit or miss and this one was a big, fat miss. Nothing much else to say.

12oz bottle. Pours a light brown color with some dark amber highlights and a small sudsy head that settles into a light ring. Smells of toasted malt and grains with just a hint of brown sugar, molasses, and faint spices. The taste is of a toasted malt, scorched caramel, rust, and a lemony tea. There is some light nutmeg and allspice but it barely comes through. Some pumpkin flavors. Medium body and slightly chewy up front, moderate carbonation.

Bottle--dark, dark amber color with a small head and some lacing. Nutmeg and spice for an aroma with a sweet, sweet caramel taste and a base of cinnamon. Light carbonation on the finish. Not too much pumpkin, but I enjoyed it. Total wine.

Tap. Pours a clear dark amber brown body with a minimal head that completely vanished. The nose is pretty typical Pumpkin Ale, lots of brown sugar sweetness, caramel, moderate spicing, and the pumpkin meat is light and lingering in the background. The flavor is rather sweet and spiced with nutmeg and cinnamon, fairly decent amount of pumpkin flavor. Not sure I dig the heavy amount of sweetness here, it makes it a bit tiring by the end of the glass. Medium bodied with a sticky and clingy mouthfeel, light fizzy carbonation. About what I expected, a middle of the road Pumpkin Ale that doesnít set itself apart.

Pours a copper brown with a tan head and aroma of toasted malt and light spice. Taste is of caramel, malt, molasses, nutmeg, allspice, and spices with the pumpkin not coming through much. Drinkable but needs more pumpkin flavor
