Tongerlo Prior is a full-bodied beer with fruity notes that develop into a spicy and slightly flowery bitterness of hops. An authentic abbey ale, the age-old tradition of the White Canons of Tongerlo lives on in this officially recognised Belgian abbey ale. Re-fermentation in the bottle gives this beer a more intense taste and aroma as well as a longer shelf life. Tongerlo Prior was chosen as the best European blond abbey/trappist ale in the 2011 World Beer Awards.

UPDATED: DEC 5, 2015 Chemisch, bijna overdreven snoepjes zoet. Enorm bruisend in de mond. Tja... Een tweede poging was beter: Wat zoet en wat kruidigs in aroma, aardig vol en een hier en daar een metaalsplinter. Smaak is zoet met zuurtje, waar zoet ietwat gemaakt is, naar fruitsap neigend. Zuurtje is sterker aanwezig in nasmaak. Wel fijn bruisend in de mond. Balans is wat weg, en elke slok brengt rating in gevaar, beide kanten op. En dat is natuurlijk ook wel kunstig. Van Theemutz gekregen.

Bottle from Mitra Bunnik, BB 21/11/16, large sample. Almost clear yellow to golden color, huge rocky head. Aroma is quite spicy, cardamom, earthy and floral hop, apple. Soft bitterness, quite alcoholic, bit sharp even, apple sweetness. Quite high on carbonation, fairly dry. Quite decent tripel, but a little on the alcoholic side.

Bottle 33cl. Clear medium golden, good two finger somewhat fluffy off-whitewhite head, mostly diminishing, good lacing; aroma malty, banana, orange, yeast, dough; taste medium sweet and bitter, spicy, light fruity, bit woody; medium body, oily texture, soft carbonation, dry bitter in the aftertaste, but also light fruity, spiciness remains, alcohol and herbal notes in the finish; a well-made typical Tripel.

A 330ml bottle with a best before date of 10th October 2016 and poured into a Chimay goblet glass. The beer poured a clear deep golden colour with a fluffy two finger white head which lasts a long time and leaves stringy lacing. Aromas are mainly bready malts and unripe banana with hints of pear. Flavour is strong with sweet banana, clove, honey and bready malts. There was also a hint of spicyness and the booze comes through towards the end. Dry, medium bodied with good carbonation. This was quite a nice tripel especially when comparing its price to other decent tripels.

330 ml bottle bought at 759 Store in Sheung Shui Centre.

Looks: Clear golden honey colour with very thin haze of yeast sediments; Two finger head and crumpety white foam which lasts for 2 minutes; Excellent sticky lacing with quite fizzy carbonation.

Aroma: Fragrant sweet malt, with refreshing strong herbs, banana, light vanilla, light caramel, wheat, molasses, bread, strong Bel yeast, thin lemon and thin grass.

Taste: Med to strong sweet malt, with banana, caramel, light wheaty tartness, light dark fruits, fairly strong alcohol, sugar, strong Bel yeast, strong lemon peels, spices, fairly strong bitter hops and herbal grass.

Body: Medium body. Slick and fairly smooth palate.

Mouth Feel: Solid maltyness in fairly rich body despite presence of moderate wheaty tartness. The strong thyme-like herbs carry well from arome onto taste. Bnana ester, spices and herbs mix well with lemon zesty hops. Sweet and alcoholic. Refreshing and nice!

Hoppiness: Strong herbs, thin lemon and thin grass in nose. Strong lemon rind, strong thyme, strong spice and grass in taste. Bitterness is moderately strong for an abrupt, mid-astringent sweet bitter finish.

After Taste: Fairly dry. Crisp, herbal and fairly boozy to mouth.

Comments: Another nice and inexpensive scoop from 759 after the surprisingly good Secret Des Moines Triple. Unlike the previously low-blow Tongerlo Blonde and Brune, this Tripel really means business with strong and refreshing herbal aroma and taste for a very nice first impression. Strong lemon and spicy hops mixed with typical Tripel full maltyness, good looks, booze and bitterness. In essence its thyme-like herbs make it shines through. A winner!

Hazy golden with big head. Malty aroma and taste. Taste adds lots of bread and Belgian yeast. Decent ale.
