Tooheys Old is always a great “fill in” session beer when there is nothing but pale lagers at your local pup, not the best but it gets the job done. Poured a deep ruby (almost black) with a dense frothy, off-white head which was average lasting. Aroma was of smoky roasted malts with some espresso coffee (mild), dark chocolate and some raisins. Flavor was a light bitterness with some roasted malts, sweet toffee, chocolate, very mild notes coffee, hints of dates and a nutty finish. Medium bodied with medium carbonation, watery texture, dry mouthfeel and an average finish. Bragesnak (2361), Aarhus, Denmark

It says it Brown ale here but this definitely and old ale. Balanced more to towards malt but definitely some subtle hop bitterness to this beer and she is a sipper. A lot off mates rib me about drinking this when out because they say its ’old mans beer’ I really enjoy it. | 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Dec 6, 2007 This has become my ’standard brew’ here in Australia as its readily available at the local bottleshop. It has a slight smokey, coffeeish scent when opened ice cold, and it pours deep dark with some ruby edging in the glass, with a slight white head. The malt flavour coats the mouth and it goes down quite smooth, even as it goes English. I got hooked on this on tap when visiting just about any pub in New South Wales, but have a hard time finding it served here in Queensland. Muggus69 (567), Sydney, Australia

The problem with this beer in pubs, like pretty much all beer in Australia, is its served way too cold, so i’m drinking this puppy with only a slight chill. Minimistic aroma, some woody roasted malt, nothing offensive. Pours a ruby-tinted brown body with creamy off-white foam and lace. Palate is on the dry side giving the body a slightly watery texture, carbonation is mild. Considerably pleasant roasted malt flavour on the body; black coffee, toffee, dark chocolate, red delicious apple skin, an odd woodiness, in no way sweet. Finishes dry, slightly bitter, quite gritty and abrupt. Certainly a session beer of choice in Australia when nothing better is on offer, considering its available almost everywhere.
