3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Dominated by whiskey. Medium sweet, like a barleywine or American strong ale. Too much whiskey character for my taste, but it is a well crafted beer. I did not think of this as an ipa when I was drinking it, the hops are mostly lost.

Bottle. Ruby pour with tan head. Dark malts, some active hop aromas. Some earthy herbal hops with sweet malty tones, this has essentially become a barrel aged barley wine.

Bottle shared by Ryan, thanks! Pours a hazy amber orange with a white head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a strong whiskey note with a bit of pine and sweet grain coming through. Flavor has sweet grains and strong whiskey with just a hint of pine hoppiness.

2013 bottle shared at tasting. Pours clear golden amber. Strong boozy and sweet notes...similar to a Barleywine. Tastes the same with a little character. Pretty good stuff.

3.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle thanks to a guy from the Midwest. Poured into a snifter. Nose is straight rye whiskey. While Iíve never had Templeton, I do like Crown royal, and this is like smelling straight crown royal. lots of peppery rye character. hard to pick out any hops. Has a slight funkiness to it as it warms. moderate wood tannins. Pour is hazy deep red with a minimal off white head. some notes of dried fruit. taste is immediately peppery with lots of wood, tannins and booze. hardly an IPA by any means. slight floral character, but I think thatís because I am digging and looking for it. a slight alcohol warming. hard to believe this is only 7.2%. overall, itís ok, but the barrel and booze are the focus here. this is like the black Tuesday of IPAs, just 1/3rd the boost.
