3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 sthlm (1227) - Iowa, USA - MAR 14, 2012
[On-tap at Toppling Goliath] Pours black with a nice, light brown head. aroma is charred malt, coffee, anis, and a little chocolate. Taste is too charred, with some chocolate lost in the char. Medium-thin mouthfeel, with a long finish. Overall, this had too much char character, and really did little to impress.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 GeneralGao (3614) - Iowa City, Iowa, USA - MAR 4, 2012
Draft. Poured an opaque black color. The head was thin and brown with good retention and lacing. Roasty malt, toffee, and distinct chocolate aromas. There were also whiffs of anise and brown sugar. Medium to full bodied. Delicately sweet up front with light roasty bitterness at the end. Chocolate, lightly roasted coffee, toffee, and sweet cream flavors.
3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 CanIHave4Beers (2500) - Des Moines, Iowa, USA - FEB 18, 2012
Pours basically black with a small off white head.
The aroma is roasty and sweet with lots of chocolate and mild ash.
The flavor is roasty and plenty bitter. The beer doesn’t taste nearly as sweet as it smells but that’s probably a good thing. The coffee character is nice but mild taking a back seat to more of a dark chocolate character. There is a mild banana character and a little bit of hop forward bitterness.
Believe the hype, these cats are the best Iowa brewery.

Aroma: roasty coffee notes, cocoa, oats and a light sweetness. Pours black, two finger tan head with good retention, leaves some lacing. Flavor: roasted grains, chocolate and coffee, somewhat earthy, slightly sweet with some bitterness to balance, nice dry finish. Medium body, medium carbonation. Solid brew.
