Tap at Toppling Goliath. The beer pours to a black brown body with a light cola head. Aroma is roasty chocolate and coffee with subtle oats. The flavor is like a chocolate revel bar. Strong chocolate and oats. Kind of reminded me of Road Slush. Clean medium bodied palate.

Pour from a growler. Big roast chocolate nose, dark black pour and a decent brown head on this one. A touch of malt sweetness to this, then big roasted malt, bitter chocolate and a roasty aftertaste.

Sampler flight on tap at the brewpub (Decorah, IA). Pours a deeper black hue, dark and near opaque body. Blackish with ruby glowing bottom and edges. A frothy tannish head atop dies to a film, laces small. Aromas are a bit of cocoa, roast, and oatmeal sweetness. Biscuits, caramel, and cocoa presence come into the fold. Darker malts, cocoa and roastiness. Silky dark malts, some milk chocolate, oatmeal malt sweetness. Roasty, toasty, sweeter biscuits. Some lactose like feel, but I donít know if thatís actually here. Silky and sweetness pervade into the middle, some body in there. Backend is toasty, malty, and cocoa. A bit roasty, dry bakers chocolate. This is well put together. Has a firm body, still silky with some good darker malt influence, toasty and cocoa, mellow coffee. Silky sweet dark malts arenít too out of control. Solid offering.

Tap. Pours opaque black with a medium brown head and good lacing. Aroma is strong espresso, dark roasted malt, and notes of whiskey. Flavor is the same, lightly sweet with a light coffee bitterness. Light to medium body, very nice beer.

Tap at the brewpub. Very dark pour with a white head. Roasty chocolate and coffee aroma and taste. Full flavored, maybe a little thin on the palate. Solid.

On tap. Poured deep brown with a spotty beige head. The aroma picked up roasty black and lesser coffee malts paired with a touch of sourness.. decent stuff. The flavor found well-roasted black malt and coffee at the core, with vanilla and rolled oat accents.. tasty. Light-medium bodied with low carbonation on the palate.. a tad smoky.. well-balanced.

From notes. Pre-GTMW at Dexterís Pub, on firkin no less. Opaque black pour, just about 1/4 off white head. Roasted malts, hint of cocoa, slight lactose. Smooth pull, more roasted cocoa, bakerís chocolate. Light-bodied. Excessively drinkable.

Pre-GTMW at Dexters. Deep brown, almost black. Coffee cocoa undertones. Flavor is bittersweet chocolate, roasted malt, coffee. Mild sweetness. Good residual coffee/cocoa.

Nothing special a bit over roasted creating a touch of unpleasant bitterness in the finish. Thin mouth feel hints of coffee and molasis. I donít really care for it.
