On tap. Poured deep brown with a spotty beige head. The aroma picked up roasty black and lesser coffee malts paired with a touch of sourness.. decent stuff. The flavor found well-roasted black malt and coffee at the core, with vanilla and rolled oat accents.. tasty. Light-medium bodied with low carbonation on the palate.. a tad smoky.. well-balanced.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Sampler flight on tap at the brewpub (Decorah, IA). Pours a deeper black hue, dark and near opaque body. Blackish with ruby glowing bottom and edges. A frothy tannish head atop dies to a film, laces small. Aromas are a bit of cocoa, roast, and oatmeal sweetness. Biscuits, caramel, and cocoa presence come into the fold. Darker malts, cocoa and roastiness. Silky dark malts, some milk chocolate, oatmeal malt sweetness. Roasty, toasty, sweeter biscuits. Some lactose like feel, but I donít know if thatís actually here. Silky and sweetness pervade into the middle, some body in there. Backend is toasty, malty, and cocoa. A bit roasty, dry bakers chocolate. This is well put together. Has a firm body, still silky with some good darker malt influence, toasty and cocoa, mellow coffee. Silky sweet dark malts arenít too out of control. Solid offering.

Draft. Poured an opaque black color. The head was thin and brown with good retention and lacing. Roasty malt, toffee, and distinct chocolate aromas. There were also whiffs of anise and brown sugar. Medium to full bodied. Delicately sweet up front with light roasty bitterness at the end. Chocolate, lightly roasted coffee, toffee, and sweet cream flavors.

Tap at Toppling Goliath. The beer pours to a black brown body with a light cola head. Aroma is roasty chocolate and coffee with subtle oats. The flavor is like a chocolate revel bar. Strong chocolate and oats. Kind of reminded me of Road Slush. Clean medium bodied palate.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
On draft at GTMW2013 preparty. Pours a rich black with a creamy looking tan head. Aroma of roast, Oreo cookie, chocolate cake and cocoa. Maybe some coffee. Flavor is bitter roasted and coffee notes parsed by sweetness from the chocolate malt. Touches of dry bakers chocolate as well. Body is indeed, as advertised, chewy, with a somewhat chalky texture, medium carbonation. Finishes dry and roasty. Overall, nice stout.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours basically black with a small off white head.
The aroma is roasty and sweet with lots of chocolate and mild ash.
The flavor is roasty and plenty bitter. The beer doesnít taste nearly as sweet as it smells but thatís probably a good thing. The coffee character is nice but mild taking a back seat to more of a dark chocolate character. There is a mild banana character and a little bit of hop forward bitterness.
Believe the hype, these cats are the best Iowa brewery.
