Draft at TG. Malty aroma, lots of toast and caramel, some citrus and pine. Pours a light brown, slightly orange color, one finger off-white head with decent retention, leaves a bit of lacing. Flavor is heavy on the toast and caramel malt, nutty, bread crust, Moderate to high bitterness, some citrus notes but the hop flavors are a bit muddy. Medium body and carbonation.

[On-tap in Clear Lake, IA] Brown Ale? I don’t think so. This is definitely an amber ale. Pours reddish-amber with a small off-white head. Aroma is weakly sweet with really very little going on. Taste is caramel, barley, perfumey, floral notes, and underlying nuttiness (hazelnut and almond). Fairly thin, smooth, with a long finish. Overall, not my thing, but fairly well made. (Note, I just checked on the Toppling Goliath website, and it confirmed that this is an amber ale. I am changing it accordingly.)

Tap at Short’s in IC. The body is a little hazy with a khaki head. Nose is malty caramel with hints of apple. There is also some peanut. The taste is grapefruit and a little nutty pecan. The finish has a little wood and more caramel. Overall pretty good.

On tap at the Iowa Craft Brew Festival 2011. Pours a reddish orange color with a small head. The aroma is clean (and fairly faint) with some toasty malt. The flavor is lots of toasty malt and a light tartness, overall very clean and mildly bitter but without a lot of hop flavor.

Poured with a fine, creamy long lasting, light tan head, with lots of lace. Color is a hazy brownish amber. Aroma is very malty, caramel, ripe apricots, yeast. Flavor is similar with a some hop and apricot jumping out. Great body and carbonation. Finish is like flavor and has some duration with a little bitterness at the very end. Session beer. Yum!

Draft at Hideaway. Poured a clear dark brown-orange color with a tan head. Light cocoa, citrus, plum, and roasted nut aroma. Medium bodied and sweet. Chocolate covered nuts, citrus, cereal grain, and toffee flavors. So so.
