3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 1FastSTi (3150) - Glendale, Wisconsin, USA - NOV 12, 2012Tap at Toppling Goliath. The beer pours to a clear amber bod with a white head. Aroma is very much an American pale ale. Light pine and oranges with some malt. Flavor is bready biscuits and dough. Some moderately bitter hops. Bitter but easy drinking. I simply didn’t think it was anything special.

Pours slightly hazy gold with white head. Aroma is kind of sweet, but not much there for me. Little bland, but there is some slight amount of decent hop profile going on there, little bit of floral goodness, but not much. Malts take priority over hops in this one, its got almost pilsner type malt profile. A pretty decent introductory pale ale, similar to Sierra Nevada pale ale and such. But better.

On tap at Toppling Goliath, has a golden straw color with minimal white head. Scent is some citrus and resinous hop notes. Taste is sweet citrus and builds into some big resin/earthy hop flavors, pretty good.

Sampler pour on tap at the brewpub (Decorah, IA). Pours richer mellow hazed straw yellow golden hue. Gentle haziness grows, frothy offwhite head atop dies to a film, laces ok. Aromas are gentle lemon and grass, some florals, bready malts and straw. Some grain, gentle florals and lemon, touch of citrus oils. Initial is lighter end of the fold, clean bitter florals and grass. Gentle bit of lemon, bready malts, some grain, straw, and grass. Mellow sweetness, bit of dough into the backend. Good florals and grass, bit of lemon, dandelion. Gentle bready malts, dough, earthy bitterness. Solid, sessionable.

Tap. Pours medium golden clear with a medium white head and nice lacing. Aroma is grainy with citrus notes. Flavor is the same, lightly sweet and lightly bitter. Light bodied. Not bad; I can see why it is billed as a "gateway" beer, but not really for me.

Draft at Alchemy. Unfiltered orange-tan. Big glass lacing frothy white head. Grassy citrus flavors, quite zesty and fresh. Orange and grapefruit tones. A great Pale Ale, very refreshing and sessionable. Toasty clean golden malt, respectably hopped.

Pale gold pour, small white head. Lots of graham cracker in this. Some light citrus hop notes, and a bit of dough. Mildly dry finish. Phone rate, bummer.

[On-tap in Clear Lake, IA] Pours slightly hazy golden with a small white head. Aroma is zesty citrus (lemon/orange), and something herbal as well. Taste is good, but hard to describe--quite malt-driven, some alcohol (especially as it warms), underlying herbal (almost minty) character again. Fairly thin, with a long finish. An okay beer, but not overly impressed. I enjoyed this more than the Tsunami Dark, but if I was rating based upon execution, the Dark was a much better example of its style.
