This was the cask selection when my wife and I visited on 12.28.2009. The brew poured a deep, dark brown with a tan head. The nose provided plenty of roasted malt along with hints of chocolate and coffee. These flavors were present in the taste as well, with the roasted character really balancing well with the smooth mouthfeel provided by the cask nature of the beer. Drinkability was high, and this was a nice twist on the other Jolly Pumpkin selections we imbibed in that day. Serving type: cask Reviewed on: 01-01-2010

MiBG Winterfest 2010: Deep brown hue with a rocky head. The aroma has notes of walnuts, peat, vinegar, grains and wood. The taste is twangy and fruity with a earthy and sea salt component. Some cocao, coffee, tobacco and woody tones but seems to be missing the roasty tones often found within the genre. The mouth feel is lively and sharp. Meh, not bad not special either.

5th Annual MBG Winter Beer Festival, Grand Rapids. Murky brown body, lactic sour nose. Tart body, with soured roasted malts and cranberry, oily and slick. Bitter finish. Tannic.

Sample at MBG 2010 Winterfest. Poured dark brown color with medium brown creamy head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Medium roasted coffee malt and sour aroma. Medium to full body with a dry smooth texture and flat carbonation. Medium toasted malt flavor with a medium sweet & sour finish of moderate to long duration. Interesting solid brew.

On tap at the Ann Arbor cafe. Pours deeep brown with an off-white head. Aroma features cranberry up front with strong cocoa and a creamy roastiness. Flavor has the cranberry again, nicely combining with a dark chocolate and roasted malts with touches of coffee. It has a mild overall tartness thanks to the cranberries. Nice job.

Sampled at the ’10 MBGWF. Dark brown pour with a small, loose white head. Nice evenly balanced fresh cold pressed dark roast coffee and tart acidity with a hint of coccoa. Smooth creamy body with a dry finish.

Cask sample at the Jolly Pumpkin Cafe in Ann Arbor. Pours hazy brown with a medium tan head. Chocolatey nose with a bit of funk and tart fruits (lemon, cherry). Roasty malt flavor with some citrus tartness before a bit of chocolate and a finish that is equally roasty and tart.

On tap at JP Cafe in Ann Arbor. Rich dark brown in color with a tan, frothy head. big nose of roasted malts, chocolate and nuts, with hop undertones. Taste is actually a little thin, given the big nose. Chocolate, roasted malts, slight coffee, a little smokiness, and underneath it all a slight tartness that adds an extra dimension. Pretty good, but wish it was a little more robust.

Tap at JP Cafe. Pours nearly black with a medium sized tan colored head. Aroma is chocolate, coffee, tart cherry. Flavor is chocolate, coffee, light tart cherry notes, some yeast. Palate is medium bodied, silky, finished bitter with a slight tart twang to it. Pretty darn good.

Had this on cask at the JP Cafe in Ann Arbor. Poured a murky dark brown with a fantastic head. Aroma was chocolate, bitter berries and a bit of licorice. Taste was much the same, the cranberries adding a nice tartness overall, balancing the creamy chocolate. Super creamy mouthfeel seemed like a really good thing for this beer. Sorted melded all the flavors perfectly. Nothing crazy complex, but very quaffable and interesting. Plus I was in a good mood as I got their just in time to get some p5.
