COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Named after the holiday created by Frank Costanza on Seinfeld, this is the first spiced holiday ale at Town Hall. Using scarlet oranges, ginger and other secret spices, this ale has a deep orange color and is loaded with noticeable "spice" characteristics. This ale is similar to wass-ale, a beverage brewed with a collection of fruits, nuts and spices by members of the local community. Traditional wass-ales are often simmered and served warm. You might try this with a growler of festivus in your own home.

Pint at the brewpub. Clear medium amber with a decent head and light bubbling action...sweet, spicy nose with touches of banana and cinnamon, bit of ginger late...body is dry, somewhat watery, cardboardy near the end, with a little orange giving it life...basically, just ok and a disappointment after all the great winter seasonals I’ve had of late. Oh well.

This holiday brew has a nice, dark orange color to it with a quicly disappearing, thin head. The aroma immediately struck me of candied orange peels. There are bits of cloves and allspice too. The taste is very up front and a potent mix of cinnamon and nutmeg. I eventually narrowed the citrus taste to tangerines, which shows up on the tongue about the same time as the bitter hops. Dry malt finish. The bartender, while talking to another group, mentioned star anise as an ingredient. Entirely plausible, but since I have no clue what that tastes like, I can not comment. Dry malt finish. Very interesting brew. It’s one of my more favorite winter brews. It strikes me as perhaps a winter version of their Thunderstorm.

UPDATED: DEC 31, 2004 light spiced and malt aromas. Dark yellow, large head. Flavor of very light spices and also the standard Town Hall flavor many of their beers have. Ginger is noticeable in the taste. finish of dry hops. This is nothing special.

Nuffield (3665) - Roseville, Minnesota, USA - DEC 28, 2004
Huge head of rich, dense, white foam drawing a clear line on the slow moving golden-amber body. Beautiful spice aroma, pot pourrie of ginger, clove, cinnamon, with orange. Nice cask palate (I had the cask version rather than the regular, though both were offered simultaneously), smooth, good temperature. Really nicely done spiced beer, extremely drinkable. (cask conditioned, hand-pull, at brewpub)

Tap @ brewpub. Copper color with a thick off-white head. I shared a pint of the cask version with Nuffield. The aroma was fantastic with ginger, pumpkin, and plenty of spice. Creamy and smooth, this beer offered more in the aroma.

Amber to Copper Coloring With White Head. Christmas Spice Aroma with Hint of Oranges. Cinnamon, Cloves on the Tongue...Orange Seems to Disappear.. Hops Seem to Cover it Up. Ends Dry and Bitter. Starts Better Then it Ends.

Appearance: clear, light peachy hue, topped with a sizeable chunk of froth, delicate white, rocky, ... Aroma: orange and ginger entwined harmoniously, and more maybe at play, for there was talk of a "secret spice blend" involved with this, it’s the ginger mainly, with maybe cinnamon and clove lying in the background. Taste: smooth and sweet, utterly untroubling, lightly lit on the palate, and easily passed down the throat. very light in body, with the flavor resting just on top. They made an easy-to-please one here, rather than a challenge, and i can see the wisdom there. Minor hops play, but disappear quickly. This a tasty brew, one that the whole family can get into at their annual Festivus celebrations, just before the Airing of Greivances, and perhaps during the Feats of Strength!

Dishwater aroma with hops and saffron. Spicey, unique. Clear amber in color with very faint visible carbonation. Little head and not much lace. Unique flavor characteristics. Saffron. Not sweet enough. Dry hop profile with spices. Cookie finish. Good but a little dry. Would be better if it was sweeter. If I get back to TH before the cask version is out, I will try that per BitterPoet’s suggestion.

On-tap at the brewpub: Bright and clear yellowy-orange color with a slippery foamed small off-white cap that keeps a thin collar at the top once the head floats off. Lacing in a moderate placement of spots and strings. Aroma is a perfume of ginger, orange, and sweet candyish malt. Flavors are spicy and lingering of orange peel zest, ginger, corriander, and nutskins while a boostful sweet candied apple and watermelon render in the back; lying low til a very late finishing return once the spice fades. A pleasing little spiced brew with a candied melon fruity malt backing thats tamefully juicy. Feel is below a mediumness with a fairly quick zip to it, yet carries a bit of thinner wateryness to it. Not one of the better drinkers at TH but a nice treat to perhaps enjoy as an after dinner drink.

Pours a hazy amber/peach color, with a couple inches of thick clumpy white foam. The pint was still cascading a bit when served. Thin lacing, but still you can count the rings. Fresh shaved ginger is prominent in the aroma, throw in a little bit of spice as well. The taste is not quite bold, but definately not mild. Again, the fresh ginger dominates. But there is also some honeyed malt flavors, a hint of citrus, and then some dry spice. A nice blend of flavor. All in all, pretty tasty and exceptionally smooth. Behind the cask smoothness, the beer was actually on the lighter side.
