Grand Cru is a very mysterious style brewed primarily in Belgium and a few areas of France. Some Grand Cru is sour, some fruity, some weak, and some strong. Our version is brewed with a special malt from France, authentic Trappist yeast, and traditional sugars and spices. After an extended maturation period, tremendous flavors prevail from this light orange colored ale. Look for sweet candy-like flavors that may conceal spiced orange, plum, pear and toffee with a distinctive white wine-like finish. This Grand Cru was just awarded the silver medal at the Great American Beer Festival (2004) in Denver.

A: The pour is a hazy dark amber color with an initially fluffy cream colored head that settles down to a thin layer. S: A very citrus forward nose, mostly of oranges, along with some notes of stale hops and sugar. A bit of a cardboard aroma, which seems strange, and some fruitiness, I guess plums. Definitely a fair amount of alcohol along with a Windex type smell. T: Overall, the flavor is pretty "meh". Sweet fruits, mostly plums and apples, and plenty of alcohol (again). Also, some of the same stale/cardboard type character that was present on the nose. M: The body is medium to full with a fairly high carbonation. This is actually one of the best things about this beer. D: I just couldn’t get into this on. Too boozy and seemingly stale/oxidized.

On tap at SPSBF. Pours a clear deep gold with a near white head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a good amount of dark fruit with some slight spice, belgian yeast and a deep backing grain. Flavor has some floral notes with the dark fruits and a backing note of belgian yeast, light spice and dark grains.

Pour from a growler shared by birchstick- thanks a ton, Jon! Pours a golden color with a copper hue and a big off-white head. Notes of honey, caramel, apricot, raisins, brown sugar, and floral notes. Medium-full bodied, with moderate carbonation and chewy mouthfeel.

GABF 2004: Clear bronze golden color with a thin white head. Fresh Belgian malty and coriander citrus spiced aroma. Sweet bready caramel malty body with great yeasty spice balance. Finishes rich and somewhat dry with a touch of pepper and hides its alcohol very well. Very authentic Belgian flavor here. An awesome Minnesota brew!

Ruby colored ale covered by an eclipsing white head. Spicy yeastiness procures gentle fruit esters in the nose while spices (coriander, curacao) accentuate the vinous (grape, prune) character. Intensely tasty in mouth, alcoholic, yet not really so malty at all, barely hinting at powdered cacao and toffee oily sweetness, moreso focusing on plant-like sweetness and spicy yeastiness. Ultimately a bit sticky and sweet.
