COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Hope and King is a full-body brew and is rich in malt complexity. Brewed with both English and American barley and many, many specialty malts this deeply colored ale has hints of roasted chocolate, caramel and raisins with very little hop presence. Our interpretation of the classic ale that originated in Glasgow, Scotland.

Dark cola colored pour witrh a thick mocha colored head an thick lacing. Candy sweet toffee aroma, delicious. Flavor has elements of dates, chocolate and toffe. Mouthfeel is just a tad thin though. Overall though, a pleasant diversion.

Sample at the brewpub. Nearly opaque, extremely dark brownish-red, like dried blood; lasting bit of cream on top. Nose a bit weak; deliciously sweet at first, some middle herbal-bready (tarragon-rye) notes, rather simple overall and sticky near the finish. Just OK.

Dark Coloring. Little head. Sweet. Malts. Caramel... Definitly worth sampling... might become your reason to come back...

Deep, dark, red color with minimal head. Aroma is slightly sweet, maybe some chocolate. Taste is much more of the same, along with some heavy malts and caramel. Very tasty!

Color, a bright, rich russet brown, nearly red in the light, with with a lovely, cramy, fluffy head, thick and well-retained. Aroma is all about the malt and again possesses a certain creamy-smooth quality, nutty, yeasty. Nothing but smooth sailing on the palate, full of character, medium-bodied. Flavor becomes more pronounced, more pleasing, as we drink further. Amazing on cask, and I'm glad this can always be found at the pub when I'm in the mood for a solid Scotch like this one.

Tasting at home from a growler purchased on 1/24/04. Pours a deep brown with reddish amber notes. Nice buiscity-malty aroma with some subtle smokey notes as well. Carbonation is excellent:soft carbonation with a tight tan head. Nice rich full malt flavor. Very little if any hops, as it should be. Rich, robust, creamy. Finish is malty with a subtle smokiness. One of their finer year round brews from a fantastic brewpub.

UPDATED: SEP 15, 2005 Some hop aroma. Dark red color. Flavor of alcohol, also some herbal and vegetable taste. This beer is outstanding when combined with a "bump" of Lindeman’s framboise.

Color is a clear dark brown, some amber highlights with a small lacy head that looked a bit like whipped cream, just a bit thinner. Smell is a soft but very pleasing and inviting sweetish malt with a bit of slightly sugary bread-like oat and grain notes. Taste is nice, its clean and smooth with mostly faint malt at start and middle but fades nicely into a very tangy hop that reminded me of rubarb in the finish. The feel is full/medium bodied but is mostly held in the middle and end when the nice tart/tangy hop and sweet malt makes its sneaky presence. This is highly drinkable and I can only imagine what it must be like from the cask? Yikes.
