When brewer Josh returned from Portland,OR the idea of a beer came with him. "Rubicon Wheat Wine" was soon in the fermenter. This is our Wheat Wine created with 5 different wheats, grains from Germany, Belgium and America, raisons, grains of paradise, and three pounds of hops per barrel. After Rubicon matured, we liked the outcome and decided to bring in a fresh oak barrel from the Jack Daniels Distillery to age the beer. 5 months later bring us to present and we look forward to the release of just 1KEG of this fine Barrel Aged Belgian Wheat Wine.

Draft at Town Hall. Deep, dark amber pour with shimmering orange highlighting. Very thin, compact head recedes nearly fully, leaving a thin ring of bubbles. Shiny and oily. Backlighting provides a gorgeous color spectrum that runs from yellow to green. This was served so cold it had a chill haze that completely obscured an otherwise totally translucent liquid. Immediately noticeable upon nosing is the underlying wheat wine base beer, which, though it seems somewhat standard, also is incredibly pungent and well executed in the aromatic push from the glass. Wheated malt evident, as well as spicy and fruity hops. Alcohol seems to be well integrated even with the monstrous whiskey presence. The whiskey and oak in the nose is huge, but it would pale in comparison to the amount in the flavor. Alcohol seems a little more subdued in the flavor even though all I taste at first is whisky. It’s the sweet barrel notes and fruit that shine in the flavor. Ample bitterness pummels it’s way through the sweetness like a hop filled wrecking ball. Incredibly warming finish, whiskey notes, wheat and fruit linger. Mouthfeel is very well rounded, carbonation level is almost perfect. Great beer.

10 ounce draught glass, RBSG Minneapolis pub crawl, June 22 2007. Clear dark copper with just a bit of head....oaky, lightly fruity aroma, hints of bourbon, rather muted overall....much more impressive flaovr, smooth with a lovely upfront bourbon-vanilla sweetness, somewhat sugary-syrupy to be sure but quite drinkable....rum raisins and marzipan show up midpalate.....low carbonation, slightly dry at the quick finish. No masterpiece but qutie nice.

RBSG 2007 Pub Crawl - on draft at the brewpub. Clear reddish gold with a white head. Lightly wheaty nose, mild whiskey. Touch of nuttiness and something like butterscotchy caramel. Flavors follow the nose, adding some tropical fruit flavors. Just a bit hot in the finish. Well done.

Special release for the RBSG 07. Pours a mostly clear copper (lighter than expected) and a thin filmy head. Aroma is tons of vanilla, oak, moderate jack daniels bourbon, but not out of control, and brown sugar sweetness. More oak and vanilla flavors, sweet caramel malts, doughy wheat, plus an added what-like body, modest bourbon and a sugary sweet finish. Overall, this was pretty good, but not outstanding.

Draft... RBSG 07... Clear amber ale with orange highlights and a small, creamy, off-white head. Good retention. Big sourmash nose with a tropical/fuzzy fruit blend and soft strokes of caramel and pomegranate. Sweet caramel flavor with apparent, but not overbearing, alcohol; wheat malt and pungent sourmash whiskey. Full-bodied and oily with lively carbonation. Boozy, lightly acidic, medium bitter finish.

Sample from tap at the brewpub. Pours clear amber. Little head when poured. Aroma is wineous, note of alcohol. Flavour is strong wineous malty with a great fruity flavour of raisins. Strong flavours and lifted up by the alcohol. Finish gets quite dominated by the raisin flavours.

RBSG 2007 Pub Crawl - Dark amberish crimson, creamy off white head. As it warmed, the aroma held heavy notes of Jack Daniel’s, vanilla, wood, and dark fruity caramel, with softer tones of coconut sprinkled throughout. Sweet hot booze with faint cherry and citrus tones were semi-balanced over the oaken vanilla toffee notes. Full bodied, soft carbonation, dry warming finish. A touch rough around the edges, but still nicely done. Could be tremendous with some more age...
