GTMW 2011. Poured a dark brown color with a large frothy brown head that lasted with excellent lacing. Moderate to heavy toasted chocolate malt aroma. Solid bittersweet toasted dark chocolate malt flavor with a solid bittersweet finish of long duration. Full body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. This is a standout beer.

(Draught) Pours an opaque black body with a thick tan head. Aroma of chocolate, roasted grain, vanilla, banana, and light anise. Flavor of chocolate, roasted malt, vanilla ice cream, caramel, and toasted coconut with moderate bitterness in the finish. A yummy dessert in a glass.

Sample at GABF 10/11/2012, thanks to Bluemeow76 for assistance with note-taking. This brew is brownish-black with a medium tan head and small patches of lacing. Aroma of chocolate, vanilla and malt. Full-bodied and very chocolatey with notes of coffee and roast malt. The finish is smooth mocha goodness. Good beer all around.

GABF 2013. Pours a big black appearance with a dark brown head. Big roasted chocolate malty, light coffee, fudge, rich sweet aroma. Really thick, viscous, goopy dark chocolate flavor with some vanilla and lightly spicy hop bitterness. Really thick mouth feel. Fun beer.

On tap at the brewpub. Poured pitch black with a thick dark brown head that dissipated completely, but laced nice and thick. Aroma was an amazing combination of dark chocolate and raisins with a bit of roasted malts. Flavor was just as great with dark/deep chocolate, raisins, and some roasted malt in the finish. Mouthfeel was extremely thick and sticky, giving an illusion of ’chewiness.’

Pours oily black with dark brown head, nose is explosive with chocolate and coffee with toffee notes. Taste is full of bitter chocolate and coffee and leads into a wonderful blend of dark fruit, and the palate is thick and creamy. Amazing imperial stout, how others should be!

UPDATED: DEC 29, 2013 Sampled at All Pints North 2013 in Duluth, MN. Dark oily pour, with a brown head. Tons of chocolate. Quite rich. Great beer - one of the better ones at the festival.

Draft pour at GTMW 2013. Pours a deep, mostly opaque brown with a small tan head. Notes of chocolate, earth, fudge, molasses, and a solid hop presence throughout. Medium-bodied, with low carbonation and a chocolaty mouthfeel. Base beer for Czar Jack? Interesting; the hops don’t come through in the barrel treatment like this, or at all. I prefer the barrel-aged one for sure, though this is a nice imperial stout overall.
