Twisted Reality Barleywine this year was very nice. Enjoy the result of extended aging in Buffalo Trace bourbon barrels. Mmmm toffee.

Draft pour at the source. Pours a dark ruby to amber with a beige head of foam. The aroma is big bourbon and toasted caramels. Notes of caramel and coconut. Fairly sweet overall. Moderate carbonation. Very good beer.

Growler shared by eorwar at DLD. Served in a mini-snifter. A: Pours brackish orange color with a light tan head forming on the pour. It recedes a to thin ring that leaves some splotchy lace down the glass. S: A lot of barrel notes, but it’s nice. Caramel malts with smooth bourbon and light oak. Light notes of leather with a little roast. T: More of the same as the nose, but a tad sweeter which I like. Lots of leathery and caramel goodness with a smooth Buffalo Trace bourbon that lingers in the background. The barrel notes of vanilla and oak are a nice compliment. M: Medium carbonation level with a smooth barrel finish. Medium bodied with a slight chew to the body. O: A really nice barrel aged barleywine. I enjoyed another pour of this one as well. The barrel really compliments the base and it doesn’t overpower any other flavors. A nice drinker at barely under 10%. Serving type: growler 05-19-2013 13:57:56

Bottle shared at Richard’s Graduation Party (Western Springs, IL). Thanks, guys! Pours a deeper copper brown hue, gentle haziness. Rich ruby copper glow with frothy tannish head, great look to this guy. Aromas are gentle red fruit, dried fruit, carmelized malts. Mellow barrel, oak, gentle spirit. Touches of toffee, toast, some caramel. A bit more dry, faint jammy presence. Nice. Initial is fuller in body, but not thick. A good blast of carmelized malts, oak, and spirit. Heat hits, a bit warm. Gentle toffee, toast, a bit of biscuit, vanilla, and sticky malts. Toasty, some vanilla, spirit. Almost an odd minty cool feel going on as we round the corner. A bit sticky, carmelized and red fruit. Gentle toffee, red fruit, touch if skin. Well constructed, good fruit presence, firm stronger barrel but not thinned. Tasty. A bit odd with that coolness.

64 oz. growler thanks to CLevar! It pours a thick dark brown color. The aroma has that quintessential Barley Wine aroma of caramel, figs, sweet and bready, only with some vanilla barrel notes. The barrel character seems well integrated into the base beer. The taste has a rush of sweetness with some caramel, chocolate and vanilla being the main features. There is some acidity in the end. This is obviously a big flavored beer for those with a sweet tooth.
