Massively hoppy, quenchingly bitter.

Tasted in 500ml bottle purchased from Fine Wine Delivery Company, in the beer chiller, Lunn Ave. On the nose, plenty of fresh, light herbacious notes. Grass, mint, fresh dew. The palate is clean but reserved. Has a refreshing quality but lacks in length.

Hazy amber with a fine white head. Cascade-like orange / pine resin in the nose mixed with more Kiwi-like pineapple rind and some plant matter / leafy notes. Faint yeast but itís mostly neutral for me. Medium body, high bitterness and relatively low sweetness cut even more by the acidic and prickly hop oils. Some Nelson Sauvin / white wine character develops as it opens, but the cara malt note begins to swell as well, the body is luscious enough to support the raw hop bitterness... and after about 15 minutes with the glass, the malt becomes the high-point of this beer for me - restrained warmth, baked bread with honey and toffee touches. I suspect English malt. Itís not the best presentation of New Zealand hops (Iím guessing Motueka, Nelson and NZ Cascade) but by the end of the glass I was warming to itís purpose. Itís a hoppy pale ale that seems closer in character to American IPA given the stark back palate bitterness. From draft at Bel-Aire Tavern in Nelson.

UPDATED: NOV 9, 2013 An enjoyable antipodean IPA with an impressive fruity taste and a less than dangerous alcohol level. Would be an excellent session beer.

Draft. A cloudy dark golden beer with a thin white head. The aroma has note of malt, hops, and lemons. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt, lemons, and citrusy hops, leading to a dry finish. The body is light.

Hazy light amber. Thin head. Mandarin & mango aroma. Mild bitterness, 35 ibus, fruity, refreshing hops. Good balancing pale malt, but not as clean b/c of yeast as Iíd like.

tropical fruits with mild bitterness. slight stickiness. not the most exciting or interesting nz pale ale, but still delicious and perhaps most importantly for this sort of thing, very drinkable.

Very nice beer, the taste and aroma is light and airy, more peach than grapefruit. Very easy drinking. I wonder if they upped the ABV to 6% if this would turn into a truly spectacular beer?

I have to give maximum points to appearance and aroma. Wow! Love the opacity and the bits in it. And the nose...such a fruit cocktail! Grapes, very sweet, and not ice wine sweet. Soapy, but not fresh coriander/crap soapy. Itís fruity, seductive soapy, full of lychees and and jambu (rose apples). The flavour is more straightforward, a hoppy, bitter, pale ale, as an India Pale Ale would be, but not oily or slick. This is just light bodied and brief. Clever bitter, not exaggerate. Still much more of an IPA than a bitter. Oh yes, and the finish is nicer, long, bringing back the fruity scents we had lost during the mouthful. Aotearoa is the name some of the Maori peoples used to call the North Island of New Zealand. It says little about the South Island (wow - political statement?). But this beer is broad in its reaches and it does say a lot about the quality of brewing in this country. Great job!
