verymerrymonk (210), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA Oct 4, 2008 Pour is a black body with a thick tan head. Very dry initially with bitter chocolate and coffee. A unique approach to the porter style as it is more bitter than the run of the mill interpretation. Naproxen (2), Hartford, Connecticut, USA does not count Oct 3, 2008 I have had the pleasure of enjoying this on tap at the brewery and in bottle. This porter is what I want in almost all my porters: lovely dark malt backbone, actual body (tired of thin porters IMO), an almost bourbon-molasses dark sugar aroma that lingers. The taupe head on this was gorgeous as well. Definitely a seasonal favorite of mine, and another winner from Troegs. PilsnerPeter (1473), Flushing, New York, USA Sep 30, 2008 Bottle: Pours a deep brown with ruby in the light, topped by a fading light tan head. The aroma is fairly fruity- mild burnt fruits and soft creamy chocolate notes with an herbal hint. Has a fluffy feel. The flavor has a subtle/mild burnt fruitiness upfront, followed by a milky middle with a soft chocolate presence. Later flavors offer darker chocolate character, with a fair amount of resiny hop bitterness into the finish, along with residual roast. Pretty solid. hellbilly (900), scottsdale über alles, Arizona, USA Sep 29, 2008 lots of fresh bottles acquired from beachbum25 and machfive55... pours dark brown and nearly opaque when held to light. it’s got a soft tan head with spots of lacing left on the glass as it retreats. insanely hoppy aroma (for a porter)... candy/bubble gum, pine, lactose, chocolate, toasty grain and hints of grapefruit. grapefruit shows up in the flavor as well... along with baking cocoa, coffee, malted cream, light ashy char and fresh juicy hoppiness with a dry piney finish. there’s a pleasant acidity throughout. lots of coffee and chocolate in the aftertaste. medium body. sharp carbonation early fades to soft and airy.
all these characteristics are amplified/enriched when consumed directly from the bottle.
i can’t wait to try these with some age. although, i really like this as an atypical hopped up member of the porter style... Biddle_Brau (154), Midland Park, New Jersey, USA Sep 27, 2008 On cask at Andy’s Corner Bar, Bogota, NJ. Pours black, slightly hazy, with thick tan head that lasted till I was finished and left nice lacing. Rich roasted coffee and chocolate aroma that was matched in the flavor with little hop presence. Nice rich and satisfying brew.
