Commercial Description:
Scratch Beer 1 - 2007, a hybrid beer (California Common Beer), will be released on or about April 26. This is a beer we brewed on the back patio on more than one occasion. It became the inspiration for Tröegs Pale Ale. The simplest explanation of what makes a hybrid beer unique is the brewer is forcing a lager to do something it doesn’t want to do. Scratch 1 uses lager yeast fermented at a warmer temperature. The fermented malt gives an exaggerated fruity undertone to the beer which combines nicely with the citrus flavors of Cascade hops. Balancing out the taste are spicy, earthy flavors derived from Brewer’s Gold hops. Slightly aggressive hops in the front of the mouth give way to a clean, subtle grape-like finish.

Pours a hazy bright yellow/gold with a nice pure white head, some lace. Aroma is very citrusy, and lemony, has an earthy doughy lager yeast component, yet some fruity esters as well. Flavor is crisp and doughy, good malt backbone with a nice earhty and citrusy flavor- more lemon in the end- cascade, but also reminds me of Sarachi ace, with its lemony character. Finsih is crisp and clean- very refreshing- good morning beer.

Bottle in trade from a forgotten source. Possibly DIM? Thanks though!
Pours a nice hazy light orangish yellow color with a small white head. Smell is lightly hoppy and with sweet tea like maltiness. Taste is fruity with lightly bittering hops and a touch of a yeasty flavor. Unique tart and citrusy flavor with a touch too light sweetness. Pretty interesting beer.

Wow. I was expecting a boring beer here, but this was outstanding (especially for this style!). Aroma was fruity hops and pretty strong. Pour was murky light gold with a one finger white head. Taste was very sweet in the front. Sugar and fruit mostly. The hops balance the sweetness, but after the swallow the cheeks are almost numb. Don’t know why but there is a crisp aftertaste that tastes like Juicy Fruit gum. Very nice.

Murky golden-yellow in colour, lingering white coloured head, good lacing. The aroma is of light citrus, biscuits, very light sweetness, some bread and grass. The flavour is of biscuits and cookies, light citrus and some floral hops. Lightly bitter mouthfeel, light body, medium carbonation. Finishes lingering, light hop bitterness.

Plain, basic and light in the flavour and aroma but that said still refreshing.

355ml bottle obtained in a trade with kkearn, thanks Keith.
Opened on December 14, 2007.
Bottled January 2007.

Pours gold with a large white lingering head. Smells of roses, earth, citrus, some strawberries, some hay and grass. Tastes of sweet citrus, touches of dry malt, some hints of grapefruit and blood oranges. Finishes dry. Very good session beer. I like that so many craft brewers are putting in the time to really attempt to nail down what a good every day beer should be capable of. Well done!
