11026 (1886), USA Mar 28, 2008 Bottle from acrcz. Black colored, scant tannish head fades to a ring quickly. No lacing. Aroma seems smokey for some reason, well roasted malts and some chocolate. Medium to full bodied, light carbonation. Tastes quite roasted, again the smokey character seems to pop up, nice bitterness is really pronounced in the finish. Light oily flavor/texture. Pretty nice beer, I enjoyed this.
badbeer (404), Iowa, USA Aug 18, 2008 Pours blackish with a beige head that retains pretty well and leaves some lacing. Smell is of caramel, malted milk balls, dark fruit, and some roast. Taste is of caramel, dark fruits, malted milk balls, milk chocolate, and ash. Higher than medium carbonation and medium/full body. Pretty good, age might help this one as it seems a bit hot right now. GAManiac (265), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Aug 14, 2008 Bottle. Pours dark, dark brown with a small, dense tan head that dissipates fairly quickly to a collar and a bit of swirl on top. The lacing is sporadic. The smell is slightly bitter roasted malts and oatmeal with a strong sweet dark fruit aroma as well. The taste starts with a bitter chocolate and roasted malt kick that gives way to the smooth oatmeal flavor. There is only a hint of fruit in the taste and the roasted notes leave a lingering bitterness on the palate. The mouthfeel is medium but a little on the thin side for the style with moderate carbonation. This is my third Scratch Beer (after 4 and 12) and the least impressive of the three. A good beer but nothing memorable. MaltOMeal (270), Land of Sugar, Texas, USA Aug 5, 2008 12oz bottle. Pours a dark brown with a tan head which dissipated quickly. Nose was of roasted malt, chocolate and some smoke. Taste was of roast coffee, chocolate and burnt malt. Mouthfeel was medium with a little hop bitterness. Seemed more like a stout than an Impy stout. Retorp (2154), Tampa, Florida, USA Jul 18, 2008 Courtesy of Dickinsonbeer. The aroma holds perfumey alcohol, dark chocolate, roasted malt and a suggestion of dark fruit. Dark brown to ruby black the body holds a thin mocha colored head. Very thin fore for an Impy...chocolate, smooth and sweet. It’s very much not to style and the flavor range is laughably narrow, but what is there is pretty tasty.
douglas88 (708), Salt Lake City, Utah, USA Jul 10, 2008 Updated: Jul 14, 2008Bottle thanks to hopdog. I really thought this was a BW after tasting it, and I really enjoyed it. Pours a dark mahogany color with a thin beige head. The aroma is full of berries, sweet chocolate and brown sugar. The flavor is balanced and excellent; a smooth and crisp fruity aspect, mostly raspberries and strawberries, a sweet chocolate and brown sugar, some roasted malts and a smooth body. No way this is 9.6%. It is so easygoing and tasty, there is a ton of warmth that I enjoyed. I really enjoyed this brew, fruity and sweet, but really balanced out by a strong hop presence that leaves a bitterness in the finish. Very damn good.
