Beerlando (1153), Orlando, Florida, USA May 1, 2008 Pours a cloudy dark sienna color with a dissipating, off-white head. Minimal spotty lacing noted. The aroma shows dark fruity notes, including fig and raison, accompanied by the requisite overly ripe banana scents. Caramel shows strong in the malt base, with a sweet, bready yeast, cloves and some peppery spice. The flavor is sweet and malty up front, with caramel and fermented dark fruit showing strong. Flavors transition into browned bananas and heavy clove spice. Sweet yeast is present throughout. What this brew lacks, in my opinion, the fullness that the wheat adds to the better examples of this style. The mouthfeel here is syrupy, with the alcohol quite detectable. Additional wheat would really help out the body, with more hop character serving to balance out the intense sweetness. Overall, this is a fairly enjoyable brew, but it is just too sweet and lacking in the component that really makes a Weizenbock sing for me....the wheat.
WeeHeavySD (1564), San Diego (Hillcrest), California, USA Jul 14, 2008 12oz that has been in the cellar for a while. Pours dark muddy bornw with a 1 finger tan head. Nose has underlining banana and way too much clove for me. Taste is slightly sweet with some fruitness and both a spiced character and a spicy one as well. All and all its an interesting beer, a style I enjoy but this doesn’t do it for me. kyzr (894), Bozeman, Montana, USA Jul 8, 2008 Bottle thanks to hopdog. Dark amber pour with decent brown head. Clove was strong on the nose with some dried fruit. Flavor was spice, sweet and had a great mouthfeel. Nice little dry finish that had some hops to contrast the sweetness of the malt. Linus_Stick (1480), Moon Township, Pennsylvania, USA Jun 18, 2008 Awesome weizen bock. Aroma was nice. Banana, clove and light fruit. Pour was a perfect hazy dark brown/burnt orange with a one finger head and impossible to see through. Taste was great. Tangy clove and spices with a yeasty bite and a bittersweet hoppy/light fruit aftertaste. Love the style and this was a great one. beerbuzzmontreal (2674), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Jun 18, 2008 Bottle courtesy of TomDecapolis. Pours a murky brownish red color with a thin offwhite head. The aroma is pretty much what I expect from the style, fruity esters, candy sweetness and bubble-gummy yeast. The flavor is also smack dab within style parameters, there’s a nice sweetness with fruity esters and bubble-gum, some wheat presence too. The body is medium to full with a creamy texture and soft carbonation. This is nicely done. Ibrew2or3 (1613), Safety Harbor, Florida, USA Jun 8, 2008 Courtesy of Gillard. Pours hazy brown-ish orange with off white head. The aroma is wheat mixed with sugar, malt sweetness, light dark fruity esters and more wheat. The taste is sweet with healthy amounts of wheat and tartness that builds up into the finish. The fruit, wheat and otherly tartness all don’t really come together all that well for me but it is an enjoyable product.
