Commercial Description:
For periods of fasting without solid foods, Monastic brewers relied on the double bock; a stronger, richer beer to fulfill their basic nutritional needs. Known to them as "liquid bread", a double bock has a strong malt aroma and chewy rich body. In the spirited tradition of naming a double bock in the suffix "ator," we give you Troegenator to provide warmth and richness through the early spring months.

A very one dimensional beer. Pours a clear brown color with a nice off-white head that lasts quite a while. Good lacing. Aroma is malty, with lots and lots of coffee overtones and a faint "mediceny" quality, like the smell of a band-aid. From there, this beer is a one-trick pony. Lots of roasted coffee flavor, but not much else. It’s possible, I just got a bad bottle but I really couldn’t find much to recommend this beer.

Bottle. My first Troegs, just finally started distributing to Ohio. Looks good enough, but definitely not like the picture shown here. It was much darker, rich brown in color with a tiny head. Aroma is strong malt fitting of the dopplebock style. Flavor is also strong than I expected...very sweet, very malty, all backed by a big roasted punch. Very flavorful. I want to try more Troegs beer, along with this one again.

9-26-2007 bottling date. Clear copper color with a fleeting tan head. Big malty sweet bread yeasty aroma. Medium body. Good taste mirrors the aroma with dark caramel, earthy molasses and bready yeast. Classic bock flavors here.

There is a lot to this beer. I thought it was good but generally I was left a little underwhelmed. The beer poured very dark amber with a tan foamy head. The aroma was mostly malty with some chocolatey hints, I didn’t catch any hops in the aroma. The beer tastes malty, almost no alcohol, the hops blend in nicely. There are rich flavors and some hints of chocolate and caramel. For an 8% beer, you wouldn’t know it as the alcohol is nicely hidden. The reason this beer disappointed a little is because it has a lot of everything, but nothing really stands out as a dominant attribute. There was also a lingering aftertaste that was not very pleasant. I must say I enjoyed the beer, but some things were lacking...I’m torn on what I think about this one. This is probably more of a sipping beer or a single bottle beer, I couldn’t really drink more than one or two at a time.

Bottle. Clear mohoganey pour with a thick off white head. Strong aroma like that of a quality dark German lager, a little malty with a good hop presence. Nice flavor, a little sweet, a little roasted and a nice hop finish with an extra little nutty roastedness to it. Nice body to it as well, a nicely put together beer.

Cold bottle from Beach Liquors, Bethany , De. whiskey brown color, off whit head with thin short-lived laceSpicey malt aromea with slight acid alcohol sharpness. Rich-malty round flavor, caramel, chocolate, some wood and raison. Reminiscent of Unibroue Terrible or even a light version of DFH Raison d’Etre. crisp finish. I’ll drink at least 4 of these...
