Ughsmash (2958), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA Jul 20, 2008 Bottled. Poured reddish-brown with an explosive cap of beige head. The aroma picked up sweet toasted oat and nutty notes with caramel and molasses.. light roast to it.. OK. The flavor was more burnt with darker chocolate and molasses haphazardly paired with sweet oat and lactose notes.. sticky, well-roasted finish. Medium-bodied on the palate with too much carbonation and too much roast.. not very good balance or feel.. not good overall. sneezey (100), Hackettstown, New Jersey, USA May 23, 2008 Pours out with a very light brown residue, presumably of yeast on the bottom. A bit roasty to smell, but not as strong as many oatmeals are. Immediate taste of bitterness and more like a dark brown than a stout. Something very off in the sourness of the taste - perhaps that yeast? But also quite a bit of hops in the aftertaste. Very small bubbles of carbonation, but way too much of it. Maybe this was pulled too early in the wort stage and overly yeasty to make up for it. Overly hopped, drowning out the grains, not a particularly happy combination. Brewbie (123), New York, USA Apr 23, 2008 12 oz bottle. HUGE fluffy head. light roast aroma, thin, no real taste stands out other than a bitter roast flavor and a bitter finish. not something i’d go back to. blipp (675), Grand Island, New York, USA Apr 22, 2008 Bottle. Pours dark brown with a fluffy beige head. Aroma is light with notes of roasted malt, and earthy chocolate. Medium body that’s a bit overcarbonated. Flavor is roasted malt, chocolate, and a pinch of bitter hops in the finish. Pretty well balanced but unimpressive. emerica56 (445), Bristol, Rhode Island, USA Mar 29, 2008 The appearance is amazing, nice thick head with sudsy bubbles and good laceing along the sides og the glass. The nose is earthy with some fresh roasted oats. I beg to differ on the flavor though. Initially it is very bitter and robust with oats and bitter hops but there is no complexity in the flavor. That same bitter roasted black malt stays in your mouth for ever and it is not pleasing at all. The finish is bitter and dosent leave a nice impression on the palate.
