3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
pours a very pretty deep-gold/amber with alot of CO2 that leads to a decent size head that retains and laces poorly. aroma is mostly of malt, with the caramel pushing a bit in front of some biscuity toast. flavor is very clean and smooth-some real juicy maltiness up front, finished with a pleasing wack of hop flavor (spicy) and bitterness. pretty nice, and pretty drinkable-and easily worth $4.99.

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
This tasted like a really fine German lager, along the lines of Hacker Pshorre Munich or Wiehenstephaner’s original. Very crisp and clean and brewed with the German purity law. Slightly nutty in flavor. Good stuff if not quite as good as their wheat

2.3 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20
12 oz. bottle from Trader Joe’s Chapel Hill
Ar: Aroma is a bit off. Standard caramelly malt aromas but laced with an odd sourish vinegary/metallic note. Neither expected nor desirable.
Ap:Good looking beer. Pours a clear amber with a frothy 1" head that leaves really nice lacing.
T: Fairly sweet malty flavors of caramel and bread dough. Finish is mildly bittered but oddly metallic.
P: Medium body, a bit sticky. Carbonation seems slightly above average.
O: Strong presence of a couple of off-flavors. Along with the Bock, the weakest of the $1 TJ’s offerings that I’ve had.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
The aroma was nutty and malty with a caramel aspect which was quite prominent. Vienna and Munich malts stood out and seemed a bit stronger than found in most Vienna Lagers. A very light haze was in the amber beer with a fleeting head. The flavor was malty and nutty with a Munich/Vienna malt toasty character. The flavor was just edging toward sweet, but was not cloying. The body was medium and the carbonation level was just below moderate. An ok Vienna, but with just a bit too much malt character.
12 ounce bottle (92 cents).

2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Decent beer for the price. Medium clear amber color. Small off white head. A decent balance of mold hops and malts. The malts over power the hops.

3.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
I wasn’t expecting a whole lot but I was very pleasantly surprised--this is a startlingly good beer for the money. From a 12-oz. bottle, this pours a crystal clear orangey-amber with minimal head. No lacing. Decent grainy malt presence in the aroma. Initial taste is nutty caramel with a hint of vanilla, followed quickly by a nice finish of hops. Surprisingly well-balanced and the finish is very clean.

2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Smells a little bit like vanilla coke (vanilla, carmel, cola), which I wasn’t exactly expecting. Mouthfeel is moderately chewy and finishes with a nicely crisp note. All in all, one of the more compelling offerings in the TJ’s own brand arsenal.
