Bottle sampled on 9/20/06: Pours a dark brown with nicely-lacing frothy light tan head. Aroma has a nice, sweet bready dark malty presence with good Belgian yeastiness. Body starts sweet and toasty with a good dark caramel malty flavor and authentic trademark Unibroue Belgian yeastiness. A good Belgian dark strong ale.

Tasted 11/3/07. 750ml bottle. Opaque with slight garnet highlights. Finger width of taupe head. Quickly dissipating head. Woody toffee aromas. Full bodied with toffee and dark berry flavors. High effervescence. Citrus note with a belgian yeast flavor. Bready yeasty. Pruney raisin flavor. A cocoa nuance evolves as it warms. More depth and complexity as the level drops and the temperature rises. Cloying but with a nice sticky flavor. Good aging. Good juice!

(750ml bottle thanks to ericandersnavy, side by side with every vintage from 2005-2009, this was #2 in my ratings) cloudy brown/orange with lasting tan creamy head. Nose of raisin, Belgian yeast, brown sugar. Taste of sweet chocolate, spicy cinnamon, pepper, cayenne, creamy, Belgian yeast. This has aged wonderfully.

Very nice {especially at 4.99 abottle}, hints of pumpernickle and dark fruits, notably raisins , plums and and figs. Spice and candy characters become more prominent as the beer warms in the glass. A touch of curacao and liquorice with a slightly alcoholic finish.

As others have mentioned, at $4.99 for a 750ml bottle, this is a great value. It pours an opaque dark brown with a cocoa powder colored head. The flavor is slightly sweet & sticky with hints of dark fruit throughout. Nicely carbonated with a creamy mouthfeel.

Interesting brew. Picked this one up at the new TraderJoe’s in Chico over the weekend. 750 ml bottle with a cork, that cost about 5 bucks, which seems like a pretty good deal. This apparently is the innagural brew. I’d like to see what it tastes like aged, though the bottle states best before 2008. Poured very dark brown with big tan head that settled down and just lingered throughout. It had minimal lacing. Malty nose Taste at the start is sweet with definite notes of malt, cloves and cinnnimon and fruitiness. Not much hoppiness. Smooth and creamy mouthfeel. I’ll most likely get more and just let it age a bit, if I can keep from drinking it that is. This is definitely one worth trying now, and later as well.

Bottle. Dark beer with a big beige head. Fruity (plum/date) aroma with sweet malt. Sweet malt flavor with caramel, fruit, and a nice yeasiy spiciness. Dry finish. Could use just a bit more depth.

Pours dark brown, with a tan head. Aromas are sugar, malt fruit, and spice. Flavors are fruit, spice, malt, and sugar. Body is too light, but this isn’t bad considering the price.

A dark brown pour, tan head, aroma is estery yeast with dark fruity malt. Taste follows brown belgian profile, that is dark fruitiness, caramel malt with yeasty spiciness. Lots of carbonation, body is lighter than expected, but good overall balance and does a good job of hiding the alcohol. Good but this one could use some cellaring.
