COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Trader Joe’s Vintage Ale is a dark Belgian style beer of great distinction produced by traditional top fermentation methods resulting in a rich and full-bodied flavor. The Champagne-like effervescence and smooth mouth feel are the result of a natural secondary fermentation in the bottle obtained by the use of a carefully selected yeast culture. This vintage ale commences with a rich head of foam, followed by a smooth dark flavor with a hint of roasted malt delicately balanced by subtle notes of noble European hops. True to its Abbey style, this year’s vintage closes with a long, complex and subtly spiced finish. Brewed once a year in limited quantity, please enjoy Trader Joe’s 2006 Vintage Ale. This ale will age exceptionally well over time, developing more complex flavor as the years go by. Exclusively bottled for Trader Joe’s. Best Before 08-28-2009.

750 ml bottle shared by Tmoney99. Pours a dark brown color with a small beige head. The aroma has moderately sweet malts, yeast and a hefty dose of spices. The flavor has a good balance with the spices, fruits and sweet malts. Lighter body than expected. This has held up pretty well.

A: The pour is dark amber/red-brown with a thin tan head forming. S: Oh man, this is very medicinal. Smells like bandaids, sage, menthol, and anise. It’s also pretty obviously oxidized. The intense herbal and medicinal thing isn’t really for me... T: It doesn’t improve at all on the palate. Cough syrup with plenty of sage and eucalyptus. There’s a bit of a sour apple flavor, which is weird, along with some warming alcohol and cardboard. M: The body is medium with a pretty high carbonation and definite alcohol heat. D: This was all sorts of no good. I wouldn’t even bother with this beer.

Bottle from JohnC. Dark brown color with a medium tan head. Aroma is spicy with dark fruit. Fruity, lightly tart and lightly sweet followed with a little spice and a sweet fruity finish. I enjoyed this.

Very tasty! Strong aroma right out of the bottle (I aged this one four years, just recently opened it) - poured dark with little head into a red wine goblet. Fine example of a strong Belgian Ale - loaded with specialty malts and a nice bready taste with hints of spice. The more you age this brew, the better it tastes as all the flavors meld together very well and the taste mellows.

Aged 3 years- wish I had tried this back in ’06 so I could compare to this 3-yr version. At Al & Sue’s. Pours a very thick brown, still active foamy head. Aroma is super sweet- rich toffee, malt, caramel. Thick, syrupy body- more sweet malt, caramel, spice. Even some mint...I thought I was crazy picking that up, but I see the reviewer below me also picked it up too. Would have thought this one would have dried out more after 3 years, but this got way more sweet, almost cloyingly so. May have let this sit too long, was almost 5 months past it’s "best by" date of August 2009. May have to drink my 2007 within the next few months too...
