COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Trader Joe’s Vintage Ale is a dark Belgian style beer of great distinction produced by traditional top fermentation methods resulting in a rich and full-bodied flavor. The Champagne-like effervescence and smooth mouth feel are the result of a natural secondary fermentation in the bottle obtained by the use of a carefully selected yeast culture. This vintage ale commences with a rich head of foam, followed by a smooth dark flavor with a hint of roasted malt delicately balanced by subtle notes of noble European hops. True to its Abbey style, this year’s vintage closes with a long, complex and subtly spiced finish. Brewed once a year in limited quantity, please enjoy Trader Joe’s 2006 Vintage Ale. This ale will age exceptionally well over time, developing more complex flavor as the years go by. Exclusively bottled for Trader Joe’s. Best Before 08-28-2009.

Aroma of cobwebs, cloves, coriander, some prune and the slightest hint of papaya. Appears a dark brown color with ruby hues; head is initially frothy, like root beer, but quickly dissipates. Flavor is intense cloves and ginger, with some nutmeg, cinammon and white pepper; there are also caramel or toffee notes buried somewhere under the spicy notes thrown off by the Unibroue yeast. Palate is intensely effervescent, with medium body. Overall, not bad for a Unibroue offering. I still think that their yeast has mutated a bit too far off the chart, phenolically, but this is an interesting brew, nonetheless.

750ml bottle. Not sure why this gets different years for each vintage as I don’t believe the brew changes from year to year. That said, I’m copying and pasting this to each vintage I’ve had due to this factor. Beyond that, every year this comes out it’s worth picking up a bottle. It’s a great dark fruited and spiced out Belgian style, something like a dubbel, yet stronger. Can’t beat it for the price!

750mL bottle, pours a dark brown / near-black with a medium beige head. Aroma is full of spices, some dark fruits, and brown sugar. Flavour is full of spices, dark fruits, some caramel malts and some licorice notes. Lively carbonation that accentuates the complexity very well. The age has done wonders to this and there is no hint of oxidation. Great stuff.

Bottle shared by Maniac at the Irish Chanukah tasting. Pours dark brown with garnet highlights, small white head, medium retention with light lacing. Aroma is caramel, cookie, and nutty malt, spices of nutmeg, cinnamon, and ginger with earthy and cellar notes. Flavor is malt dominant, light spicy alcohol, spices and Belgian yeast with light hops and bitterness with a sweet finish. Full body, medium warmth and carbonation.

My bottles of this (enjoyed annually since the release) have all been gushers. They pour a deep dank brown with a huge off off white head. Nose and taste are a nice blend of spices and dark sweet malts, caramel, raisins, figs. If this beer wasn’t do overcarbonated I think I would give it a 4+

(Bottle) Pours dark brown. The aroma is yeast spicy with notes of nutmeg, ginger and white pepper. Light roasty and lemon sour undertones. Hints of dark fruits, dark berries (cherries), earth, liquorice, violet, anise and grassy hops. The flavour is medium sweet, light bitter and light acidic. Spicy in the taste as well with notes of anise, ginger, white pepper and nutmeg. Subtle fruity. The mouthfeel is velvety with a sparkling yet soft carbonation. Quite yeasty and light roasted with touch of grassy hops. Medium bodied.

Bottle, 75cl corked, shared by Brugmansia. It’s a reddish dark brown beer with a two-finger beige head soon diminishing into a thin layer of bubbles. Spiced nose with dried fruits and a solid dose of cola, and that’s not in a bad way. A bit effervescent maybe, full-bodied and not too sugary. Quite dry actually. Flavorwise there’s the same cola and spices found in the aroma, still in a nice way, a good bitterness chimes in too. A beer I enjoyed drinking. An odd mix of cola and a dubbel maybe, but the spices and bitterness adds the needed dimension to it. Nice. 110319
