awaisanen (1161), Irvine, California, USA Jan 6, 2008 From a 750mL Bottle. Pours a hazy, dark chestnut brown color with a thick layer of fine bubbled, foamy off-white head. Aromas of coconut bark and fruit cake malts mingle with ginger, clove, and coriander spices. Some notes of soft, molasses bread dough and the signature Unibroue yeast character creates the estery and lightly peppery phenolics. Candied oranges. Medium bodied, finely carbonated mouthfeel with soft, soothing texture. The light chocolate malt flavors that melt across the palate initially are heavenly, but an extraordinary amount of spice character follows up quickly on its heels, detracting from the malt characters. Rummy raisin bread and chocolate up front, but a massive tidal wave of ginger follows quickly behind, messing things up. Toward the finish, some herbal coriander notes come forward, along with a mild peppery phenolic spice. I’d love to taste this beer without the spices, as it tastes like it would be really good. The spice character covers up the malt and yeast nuances a bit too much for my preference overall.
jjpm74 (3160), Stratford, CT 06614, Connecticut, USA Oct 12, 2008 Pours dark brown with a tan head. Smells of dark fruit and brown sugar. Tastes boozy with some fruity hints on the finish. Unbalanced. mgumby10 (1651), West Palm Beach, Florida, USA Sep 21, 2008 Pours a dark maroon color, with a big, frothy, light tan head. Smells of sugar plums, apples, grapes, Belgian candy sugar, and dark sweet malts. The flavor was much of the same. Mostly fruity, with some noticeable sweetness to it. Not a whole lot of complexity, but very fruity with a medium to full palate, although I thought it finished a little thin. Decent dubbel, not awesome, but kind of run-of-the-mill. SuperDave70 (831), Beautiful Sunny Mesa, Arizona, USA Sep 20, 2008 Pours a hazy deep ruby-brown color with a thick foamy tan head that sticks around. Yeast, ripe fruit and caramel malt in the aroma. Flavor is lightly sweet with lots of dark fruit and spice. A touch of yeast, hops and alcohol on the finish. Tasty! AmEricanbrew (1018), Swamp Shreveport, Left Coast, Louisiana, USA Sep 19, 2008 Hazy deep copper color with a frothy eggshell head that lingers-nice pour. Yeasty peppery aroma. Medium body with soft carbonation. Taste starts with dry roasted malts overlayered with some lightly sweet caramel, then a spicy yeasty alcohol twang to finish. Another nice Unibro brew. dwyerpg (2094), Las Vegas, Nevada, USA Sep 14, 2008 A clovey banana wheat aroma. Looks great. Huge head. Sweet, wheaty, pretty good stuff.
