COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The Trader Joe’s 2008 Vintage Ale is a brown Belgian-style ale of great distinction produced by traditional top fermentation methods resulting in a rich and full-bodied flavor. The Champagne-like effervescence and smooth moth feel are the result of a natural secondary fermentation in the bottle obtained by the use of carefully selected yeast. This deep brown color vintage ale, with a tint of red hue displays effervescent generous beige foam. It has notes of coffee and spices, mild aroma of tropical fruits. Trader Joe’s 2008 Vintage Ale has a smooth round mouth feel and notes of roasted malt, carrying toffee-like flavor, finishing with well balanced noble hops. True to it’s Abby Dubbel style, this year’s vintage ale offers a highly distinctive flavor enhanced by the fruity and floral notes of the yeast. The result is a complex and warming ale that offers both strength and subtlety. Brewed once a year in limited quantity, please enjoy Trader Joe’s 2008 Vintage Ale. This ale will age exceptionally over time, developing more complex flavor as the years go by. Exclusively bottled for Trader Joe’s. Best before 09-09-2011.

This starts with the standard aroma of the Unibroue yeasts. Pours a hazy reddish-brown, with a large white head. Unlike previous Trader Joe vintages, this head does not fade down to nothing quickly. Slightly sweet flavor, with hints of dark fruit. Alcohol is very well hidden, and the finish does have a hint of spice. For five dollars a bottle, this is a nice value beer that drinks well.

750ml bottle, shared by tmoney99. I got the end of the bottle, probably about 5-6oz. Dark brown color, lots of sediment resting on the bottom of my glass. Good thin off-white head, little loose lace. Dark fruit, some chocolate, light coffee, little spice, light citrus (orange peel, pineapple).. Good amount of tropical hops for a dubbel, balances out those dark notes nicely.. Medium to bigger body. Soft, smooth carbonation. Easy drinking, for 9%... Very little alcohol taste. Moderate bitter, light sweet. Very interesting, complex ale. Drinking great right now, especially considering it’s age. The nice, smooth effervescent carbonation is also still impressive, 5 years later.

22oz bottle courtesy of Headbanger poured into a Trappist Glass at 39°. Color is a deep hazy amber with good carbonation and a soft tight off white head. Aroma is fruity with toasted caramel. It has a bolder medium body with a fizzy mouth feel. Flavor of yeast, dried fruit, toffee and a bit of spice. The flavors fade out slowly in the after taste. Overall this is just a great brew.

750mL bottle, pours a hazy dark amber with a medium off-white head. Aroma is quite subtle, with some light spices, mild dark fruits, and some Belgian candied sugar. Flavour is very, very similar to the 2007, with dark fruits upfront, some brown sugar, caramel, and more dark fruits. If I tasted this is a blind tasting, I’d likely not be able to tell the difference from the 2007. Fairly restrained carbonation, as the 2007 vintage, with the fruitier tones upfront and quite complex. Stronger flavour than the 2006, and like the 2006 and 2007, this has not suffered at all from age. Excellent stuff.

Deep amber pour from a bottle that sat in my wine rack for over 4 years on its side. I know, you aren’t supposed to do that, but I was young and stupid back then (now older and stupid). Nose is forward with dark fruit (blueberry??). Very nice taste, spicy, subtle dark fruit and really nice! Thanks Trader Joe. I will buy more of this to forget about!

Pour out of 750 mL bottle, cork out with a pop and slight gush, but no infection. Dark reddish brown pour with white head, aroma brought notes of tart fruit with some blueberry, hints of red grape, touch of oak, caramel, slight spice notes in there as well. Taste is a mix of sweet blueberry, tart fruits with some raisin as well, touch of oak, vanilla, some candied nuts, hints of toffee, caramel, finishing fairly sweet, slightly dry. Nice, pretty cool stuff.

Lovely. Dry on the finish. Lots of very round malt flavors with a dark fruit and pie cherry character.

March 4, 2011 - with blankboy, garthicus, gregclow, jerc and mabel: 750ml corked & caged bottle via trade with irishboy (thanks, Richard!). Clear bright amber, quite bubbly with an average fizzy/frothy beige head (3+). Yep - Unibroue yeast - classic caramel/yeast/spice/alcohol aroma - always appealing. Taste follows - like a fizzier caramel-sweet Belgian brown with nice yeast and alcohol. Thickish and syrupy body, solid carbonation, quick-finishing, a little sweet and boozy - very yeasty. Nice.

750ml bottle, courtesy of Mike P. Thanks, dude! Pours a murky, cola-brown color; modest fine-bubbled white head with solid lacing. Light oxidation/dry caramel in the nose along with dried cherries and fruit leather. Medium-full body; lively carbonation. Lots of dry caramel, dried dark fruits, pepper, and doughiness; chewy and reasonably oxidized, but still tasty. Finish of dough and caramel; mostly balanced end.

Pours a dirty brown body with a healthy white head. Spicy, also some raisin, plum and fig. It has the typical Unibroue tingle or effervescence, for lack of a better description. Very good.
