4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 jercraigs (6477) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - FEB 29, 2012
2012-02-20. Nice black body with a frothy foamy head. Aroma of Belgian yeast and modest spices carries into the flavour, the overall impression of both is of a spiced take on Trois Pistoles, similar malt and yeast character. Smooth average plus to medium bodied palate is quite effervescent. Quite nice. Bottle from Trader Joes, Michigan

Hello Unibroue! Very dark brown, late autumnal looking with a very frothy aerated (not creamy) big stable head. Spicy aroma! Sweet and spicy. Mincemeat and pecan pie, lots of caramelized nuts with crystallized dark sugars on the outside. Dessert. Dense dates. Highly carbonated with big soft bursty foamy mouthfeel. Balanced, with spice and sugars. Nutmeg and cinnamon throughout, anise occasionally, and tons of dates and dark date sugar. Total dessert beer, coming dangerously close to being too sweet but with enough drying. spice in the finish to prevent it from getting cloying. Yum, happy!

Very nice. Pours a deep blackish-brown with a thin white head. Strong aroma, mostly of Belgian yeast. Very nice flavor, well-balanced between the malts and yeast, with a bit of grassy hops. Complex, yet quite drinkable.

These Trader Joes Ales never disappoint. We have been Enjoying them for the last 3 years, and this one is the best batch. Fruity sweet smell, and a dark carbonated pour. Taste is very smooth, with a malty flavor, but not as sweet as last year. Lots of complexity. We will be letting a bottle sit for a few years.

750 c&c from Trader Joes in Davis, CA. Cork came out with a decent pop. Pours very dark brown with a foamy/fizzy light tan head. Aroma is mostly spice with a touch of banana. Deep inhalation is fun, but doesn’t help with the definition. Nice aroma. Med plus body. It’s very spicey, but I think I still get some grassiness. For the rest it’s dark fruit and dark malt. Maybe a touch of kandi, though it seems balanced.. It’s just a bit harsh, but maybe that’s the spice level. Overall it’s just wonderful.

This kind of thing is the reason why Trader Joe’s is the best thing to have happened to upward-aspiring but cheap gourmands. To get food and drink that is repackaged from great suppliers, and get it at a great cost...I don’t know if it’s any more ethical than what Walmart does, but it makes for a great experience. Here, Unibroue has given them a Belgian that comes out with a big head, but settles into a warming yet rounding fruitiness, with more backbone than a Sylvester Stallone. Excellent, enjoyable beer.

Very dark color but a thinnish head. A bit of anise, this is pretty light in flavor, but quite candy sugary sweet.
