Tj’s 2012 VA pours a rich black brown with a very firm head of mocha small bubbles. Nose is spruce and a bit of floral hops. Some alcohol and banana on the scent as well. taste is just a hint of cherry or other red fruit, that is lightly sweet. there is a hint of cereal like earthiness in the middle. Finishes clean with just a bit warming heat. Body is fluid with just a smidge of bubbles. A very nice belgian again this year from Unibroue.

Very dark brown. Aroma has some aniseed and spices. Lots of complex dried fruits. It’s quite sugary. Also rich and warming.

I am not the biggest Unibroue fan but this was pretty respectable and well-balanced. Lots of roasted malt and yeast on the nose. Decent belgian taste to it (dubbel-ish). Some nice complexities too of dried fruit and some spice. I was pleasantly surprised. Not the greatest by any means but enjoyable. I’d be interested to see how this cellars. Well done.

750mL bottle. The aroma on this has the distinct Unibroue yeast profile - very fruity with hints of pineapple and passionfruit. There is a light underlying spiciness, which seems more along the way of nutmeg. Light toastiness, too. Fairly straight-forward aroma. Modestly transparent mahogany-colored body present with a large, fizzy, light tan head. Good head retention. Starts with a sharp carbonation. Becomes a little sweet with some toffee-like flavors, before this becomes a bit spicy (white pepper). Some of the fruity, pineapple yeast esters then follow, before this finishes with a little bit of metallic flavoring and a little anise. Entirely overly carbonated for me, but decent nonetheless. Curious is all of these vintages are identical, though?

Bottle. Shocked I haven’t rated one of these yet as I feel like I’ve had it every year. Haven’t has a Unibroue in a while and don’t miss it too much. Strong yeasty phenols, light pine, raisins, hazelnut, roasty malt. Flavor has some schwarzbier-like qualities, and ends with a sweet, slightly watery, light anise finish.

Bottle shared by my brother in law, thanks for the opportunity Dave! Pours a deep dark brown with a smallish off white head that shows moderate retention and lots of lace. The aroma holds lots of brown sugar, a smattering of dark fruit, lots of yeast and fruity esters, a bit of pepper, and a faint non descript spice. The flavor follows the aroma quite well. Lots of dark fruits and dark sugars with a strong bit of Belgian yeasty flavors. There’s a hint of spice but it is faint and compliments rather that overpowers like so many other holiday brews. Medium to thick body with a moderate to high level of carbonation and a sweet sugary almost bubbly mouthfeel. This is a very nice beer. It has that unmistakeable Unibroue taste and aroma. I’m told that this was six dollars for a 750, that’s a hell of a bargain these days for a great beer.

Pours pretty much black with a beige head. Aromas of spices (esp. nutmeg and clove), sweet bready malt, dark fruit, a little oxidized. Taste of fig, raisin, spice, bread, burnt caramel, maybe a hint of banana. Slight hoppy bitterness, but very much in line with other dark Belgian-style ales from Unibroue (that’s a good thing).
