Unique and limited edition, this Belgian style ale is crafted once a year as a special treat for those of you who appreciate flavorful, bottle-conditioned ale with character. This year’s vintage: a rich, dark and full-bodied ale with a fine and generous coffee-colored, beige foam. It’s ready to enjoy right away and you may also wish to cellar a few bottles. It will evolve interestingly well, developing more complex flavors as the years go by.

750mL bottle purchased at Trader Joe’s in Davis. The aroma has a fruity, lightly piney character present with typical phenolic character from the unibroue yeast strain. Mostly opaque mahogany body with a small, quickly dissipating light tan head. Starts with a spritzy carbonation, before this becomes rather sweet with some chocolate maltiness and some molasses. Light yeast esters with fruit notes (pineapple) and some clove come in through the middle. Finishes with a minute roastiness. Fairly sweet, and a bit lifeless.

Poured into a Unibroue snifter a black brown with a huge head. Aroma is straight up Belgium yeast with some dark sweet fruit. Taste is thick dark fruits with some serious spice yet not enuff to complicate the brew. Caramel is there with some slight coffee toffee. To the palate the carbonation is HUGE. After popping the cork the brew overflowed all over the counter. No worries still a nice beverage and a 750 ml bottle for $4.99. Bought a 2nd one to lay down with previous Vintage Ales from TJ.

Bottle shared thanks to matt! Pours a dark brownish black with thin ring of tan lacy head. Aroma is Belgian esters, nice peppery spice and dark fruity, malty back end. Taste follows, very easy for the abv, not too bad.

Quite sweet with cherry and raisin notes. Sweetness may diminish with cellaring, and that may be a good thing because, while not cloying, this beer has an intense sweet finish that overwhelms the malts and fruit.

Phoenix bottle. Typical pour that is reminiscent of Coke with a bubbly head. Aroma of sweet malt, nutmeg and cinnamon. Christmas flavor that reminds me of spruce mixed with speculoos. Pretty nice and definitely a Christmas beer.

Bottle:   Super deep brown, moderate foamy tannish head, spotty lacing.   Typically house character for Unibroue, along with a touch of what seems like lime leaf.   Spicy, but hard to pin down.   Cardamom, touch of sage, maybe some grains of paradise.   Similar taste, spritzy, light alcohol on the backside.   Middle of the road for Unibroue, but still tasty.   Has their yeasty house character too.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate.   Given away a bit by its abundant carbonation.   Finishes better than most any other $5 750ml Belgian Strong Ale.   Spicy, yeasty, and pretty much what I expected for these Vintage Ales.

Bottle. Poured hazy reddish brown color with a large frothy off-white head that was mostly lasting with good lacing. Moderate complex dark fruit and coffee aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and lively carbonation. Solid balanced sweet flavor with a medium sweet finish of moderate duration. This is a smooth complex beer

Slightly sweet aroma of dark fruits, and a touch of spice. Pours an opaque black with a ridiculously large light tan head. Very heavy on the fruit flavors, fading to the Unibroue house yeast spice. Lingering sweet flavor. Overall a good beer, and a great deal at $5 a 750 mL bottle.
