Nice, but not very complex.

Pours sparkling deep reddish brown . Bubbly, fading, half inch of head. Noisy. Aromas of chocolate, chicory, treacle, nuts. Taste is rich maltiness, with all of the above, with a little more caramel. Some balancing bitterness, but not much hop character (as you’d expect per style). Fairly one dimensional, but well made and pleasant to drink.

500ml bottle pours a deep amber color with a 2 finger white head that settles down to leave some spotted lacing on the glass. Aroma is caramel and light roasted grains with some mild floral hops. Taste is light roasted grain bitterness with some caramel and a grassy hop bitterness that lingers. Medium bodied with modest carbonation. A somewhat tasty bitter that is worthy of a try.

Bottled. A dark mahogany coloured beer which pours with no head. A fruity and bready beer. Decent warming Autumnal qualities. Low hopping but good sweetness. Has Germanic bock qualities. Pretty good.

Bottle at Dobbies Garden World Aberdeen. It pours deep mahogany brown, with a thin, light tan head. The nose is chocolate, currant, smoke and caramel. The taste is wood, earth, chocolate, caramel, blackberry, ripe blueberry and light roasted malt, with a dry-roasted finish. Moderate body and average carbonation. Ok.

500ml bottle from Dobbies garden centre, Ashford. Deep clear chestnut colour with lasting beige head. Some toasty malts, some choc on aroma. Even a touch of hops on the aroma. Earthy malts in the mouth. Some sweet dark toffee on the finish. A little roastiness on the nose. Some cardboard staleness on the swallow although the best before is Apr 2012 so a year on drinking it now. It’s ok for the aroma and the toffee, but the rest isn’t great. Filtered and pasteurised.
