2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bottle from LCBO. Dark brown body, small tan head fades fast. Very muted malt aroma with a light hint of smoke. Flavour is caramelly malt, very mild maple character. Alcohol is basically non-existent in the flavour. Average to medium palate is smooth, but a touch under carbonated for my liking. Pleasant, but it is just generally too mild and muted. Would like to see them take it up a notch.

2.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 8/20
Bottle from LCBO. It begins VERY much like a good German Doppelbock - namely a substantial malt personality with some interesting complexity and hints of íwildí barnyardy flavors.
But this one really falls apart across the finish, which is a little short & the flavors disintegrate. So ultimately here is another so-so Canadian micro. I hope they will work on refining it.
I wouldnít call it ísweetí Per Se - Kastell Donker is ísweetí - this Bock is just malty without being roasty. Itís very much worth risking a try even though there are better bocks out there.

1.9 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 7/20
650 mL bottle fresh from the LCBO... Dark brownish amber with fluffy off white head. Looks like Cola. Light grainy aroma with a musty aroma... what the hell where is the maple? Iím picking up a roasted malt but there is something putrid about this that doesnít quite work. Finish is not that great... dry bitters. Drain pour sadly. I was looking forward for something interesting.

1.9 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 6/20
650 mL bottle. Deep, deep ruby brown with a bit of head. Fizzes like a cola. Aroma of . . . well . . . I guess that must be the maple syrup?!? Flavour begins nicely with roasted malt, but is almost immediately crushed beneath the lingering weight of molasses/maple sweetness. Tiny bit of hops at the very end. But way too sweet. Couldnít finish it.

1.8 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 5/20
Bottle from the LCBO- Cola coloured liquid fills the glass. Creamy, foamy, tiny bubbles top the beer, lace the glass, and last a good lenght of time. Looking good! Now on to the aroma..........bleeeargh! Rotten apples with vinegar, horse blanket, barnyard funk, like stale malts laced with brett. Flavour profile is pure vinegar, with an overly yeasty presence, and an odd sweet(though barely detectable) flavour, which I guess is the maple. If this was a blind tasting, Iíd mistake this for some sort of lambic. Carbonation is assertive to the point where ten minutes after the pour, the beer was still fizzing like I had just poured it. The rest went down the drain. At $4.00 a bomber, this beer is going to turn a lot of people off this brewers beers forever. Obviously infected, and I suspect this brewer is ignoring signs that every damn beer they make ends up this way. Do they not have any quality control?

2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 5/20
This bock pours a near black colour with nice tan creamy head. Scents include molassass, roasted malt and maple syrup. First taste is thick feeling. Almost syrupy, go figure. Smooth, almost undercarbonated. Slight metallic taste. Strong roasted malt/molassass flavours. Very sweet, almost sickly sweet. To put back this whole bottle Iím feeling it would be like drinking a bottle of syrup. The finish is almost oily with a way too strong sweet flavour. Iím gonna try to finish it but Iím not gonna like it.
My wife and I had a bottle each. Totally different flavours. Hers tasted like malt vinegar....

1.8 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 2/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 7/20
UPDATED: FEB 25, 2008 650ml bottle fresh from the brewery
Poured a dark brown lager into the glass...pathetic cap vanishes almost immediately to a light ring. No lacing capability
Aroma is more promising...toasted grains, figs a whiff of sweet maple and then this ungodly musty smell like working yeast.
Flavor has some nice toasty grain in it but is absolutely inundated with cloying sweetness...no detectable hops, slick mouthfeel and a sugary finish with some light char.
Far too sweet...like one of their meads except maple flavored...too sweet to drink I poured the remainder down the sink.
I think Iíve about had it with this brewer they just donít seem to have any brewing savvy at all...the seasonals are either pedestrian efforts, relabeled standards, or laced with demerara and alcohol..the standard fair and all their offerings have a uniform bad yeastyness to them that just upsets my stomach and Iíve got a pretty strong stomach.
Stick a fork in íem Iím done with them tiill thay make some big changes.
