tupalev (2311), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Jun 18, 2007 Bottle, thanks GregClow. Dark hazelnut brown, very little head. Decent aroma of wood and maple syrup, some dark malt as well. Taste - wow, a trafalgar that isn’t acidic and sour! And this one has sat in my fridge for 2 months! I’m stunned. Taste features lots of maple syrup sweetness over a decent brown ale base. This sucker is super sweet, making me think I may not like it when it warms up a bit. Some nice slow slight alcohol burn in the finish. Body is a little thin. This just goes to show you what a little Quality Control can get you - get consistent Trafalgar and I’ll buy your products again. I mean look at the ratings for this guy - most have had awful off bottles, much like I have in the past. But this one right here is in good shape and is a decent beer. Beer Snob (356), Ontario, Canada May 8, 2007 Really quite similar to their Downrigger Bock.
Which is a good thing, although I don’t know where the maple syrup is in this beer. But, a nice strong and somewhat tangy bock. jerc (3212), Toronto, Ontario, Canada May 4, 2007 Bottle from LCBO. Dark brown body, small tan head fades fast. Very muted malt aroma with a light hint of smoke. Flavour is caramelly malt, very mild maple character. Alcohol is basically non-existent in the flavour. Average to medium palate is smooth, but a touch under carbonated for my liking. Pleasant, but it is just generally too mild and muted. Would like to see them take it up a notch. DerWeg (442), Tronna, Ontario, Canada May 4, 2007 Bottle from LCBO. It begins VERY much like a good German Doppelbock - namely a substantial malt personality with some interesting complexity and hints of ’wild’ barnyardy flavors.
But this one really falls apart across the finish, which is a little short & the flavors disintegrate. So ultimately here is another so-so Canadian micro. I hope they will work on refining it.
I wouldn’t call it ’sweet’ Per Se - Kastell Donker is ’sweet’ - this Bock is just malty without being roasty. It’s very much worth risking a try even though there are better bocks out there. blankboy (2609), Toronto, Ontario, Canada May 8, 2007 Bottle (650ml) shared with GregClow, mds, jerc & mabel -- courtesy of GregClow. Pours a clear amber-brown with a small diminishing tan head. Aroma has lots of caramel malt and not much else. Flavour’s watery with lots of caramel, a hint of maple syrup and a finish that is off and unpleasant. Average bodied. The bottles must vary in quality cause this wasn’t as awful as some of the other ratings, but even at it’s best it’s just alright.
