OKBeer (1159), Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada Jan 9, 2008 Sampled at 2007 Brewnosers’ Christmas Gathering. Dark brown in colour with a quickly diminishing frothy off-white head. Coffee, chocolate, and faint smoky aroma. Light chocolate, maybe some coffee, with an astringent lightly smoky finish. Light to medium bodied, soft but watery mouthfeel. Much like the Big Rock Expresso Stout, this one is just too simple, watery, and light bodied to stand out. At least it didn’t appear to be infected yet, which has been the case with most if not all the Traflagar beers I’ve had. tiggmtl (4307), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Jan 4, 2008 Strong roasted malt in the nose along with some raisin/plum fruitiness and some sulfur but I really can’t find even a hint of smoke. Clear deep garnet brown coloured body sports a very shy white head that recedes almost instantly to a slight collar. Strong cabbagey DMS in the flavour but no smoke. Roast is quite apparent as well. Thin, dry and astringent with watery texture and low carbonation that is short-lived. Bottle (LCBO at Summerhill, Nov-07). mgermani (862), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Dec 31, 2007 Pours a brownish black with a brief head and a nice smoky aroma. Nothing too pungent, not a rauchbier by any stretch. Tastes stout-like, with just a hint of woodsy smoke. Body is thick but not exactly creamy. Nice smoky finish. Decent stout, I could have done with a bit more oatmeal though. gilvanblight (390), Windsor, Ontario, Canada Dec 28, 2007 Immediately noticed a distinct lack of head. Deeply syrupy brown pour. Very caramelly scent. Lots of toffee and coffee. Definite smoke flavor. A hint of licorice and roasted nuts in the aftertaste. Waterier then expected. A nice thick smoked taste but I have had much more complex and better stouts. Near the finish noticed how under carbonated this beer is.
matt7215 (942), Cambridge, Ontario, Canada Dec 26, 2007 650 ml bottle. pours brown with almost no head or carbonation. aromas are smoked malts and some roated sweet malts. flavours are smokey with little traces of sweetness here and there. not very well put together or thought out. very thin and watery and th flavours dont work well together at all. i wont be buying this one again. Trev (850), Lakeville, Minnesota, USA Dec 25, 2007 Pours an opaque dark ruby brown with no head.
Aroma was light malt, some coffee.
Palate was thin, flavour was underwhelming. Some coffee tones. Slight bitterness in a watery finish.
Not offensive, but not likely a repeat buy.
garthicus (1215), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Dec 22, 2007 650 ml bottle - No head, no matter how hard I tried to pour one, dark ruby red colour. I find it hard to detect a distinctive aroma, The flavour is unusual, I am sorry, I can’t put a finger on it, bitter finish, leave it with me, I may have to rate again. jason (1620), Easton, Pennsylvania, USA Dec 18, 2007 Bottle. Thanks to radiomgb for sending me this one. Pours a thick black body with thin head. aroma is smokey, lightly sour, light choclate. Taste is smokey, bitter chocolate, roast. Looks like I may be one of the few that enjoyed it.
