Maltybones (60), Calgary, Alberta, Canada Oct 28, 2007 650ml bottle. Pours dark brown with almost no head and a somewhat smokey, but very faint aroma. Flavour originates from very mild roasted malts, with any oatmeal charcter that it might have had being lost in the brewing process somewhere along the way. Extremely thin mouthfeel for an oatmeal stout. Very disapointing. KingofCastle (202), London, Ontario, Canada Oct 27, 2007 650 mL bottle. Oh when will Beamish return to Canada? WHEN WILL BEAMISH RETURN & SAVE US FROM THESE USELESS STOUTS!! This beer has a strong burnt flavour: not smoked, or chocolate, but burnt! This one strong flavour makes it flat & unpleasant to drink . . . it is boring. This is part of the awful trend of micro breweries who create stouts with strong flavours that don’t work together & are not fun TO DRINK. No head, no lacing, no competing flavours, no body; just fizzy, flat, burnt swill. I love ales & stouts, but give me a few Steamwhistle or Walkerville to drink any day over this (breweries who didn’t forget that beer needs to taste good). This stout takes all the fun out of beer. Drink enough of this & you’ll be on anti-depressants. daniel0017 (232), Ontario, Canada Oct 27, 2007 650mL bottle: Very dark with brown hue, no head, no lace. Strong aroma of malts and some smoke. Intense malt and caramel, very flavorful. Bitter throughout Dry, crisp finish. Watery, bland palate. Nothing special but drinkable. BeerPrince (1701), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Oct 24, 2007 Dark brown, minimal head. Aroma is light coffee and roasted malt. Slightly smoke favour with some roasted malt and brown toast. Thin and finishes watery. tupalev (2605), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Oct 22, 2007 Bottle, LCBO. Black with red hues, decent sized tannish head. Decent aroma - dry malt, maybe a whiff of smoke. Taste is ok as well - body is way too thin, but the roast and sweetness here mix well. Drinkable, rather bland but not infected! MrManning (1634), London, Ontario, Canada Oct 19, 2007 100 cl sample, LCBO tasting- Pours a thick and fizzy beige head. BOdy is cola brown. Roasty, slightly nutty aroma, some smokey undertones, some burnt sugars. It’s all very mild, but this is the first beer from these guys that hasn’t smelled like a fruity yeast infection. FLavour profile is mild roasty malts, some coffee, a touch of molasses a pinch of hops biterness. Not nearly as thick as other oatmeals I have had, and it’s not as smoked as I expected, but come to think of it, I was expecting this to be horrid, and it wasn’t. Slacks (481), Bolton, Ontario, Canada Oct 15, 2007 650ml Bottle: I promised myself no more Trafalgar but couldn’t help but add a stout to the ratings. Pours red-black, zero head. Aroma is quite mild, but there’s some definite roasty malts coming through. Pleasantly, none of that "Trafalgar smell".. you know what I’m talking about. The flavour.. well, it’s not bad. Nice enough, good roastiness, albeit not too complex. I’m fairly sure there’s no oatmeal to be found, it’s extremely light in texture and mouthfeel. But, no nasty sour Trafalgar taste.. for that, commendations. I drank a glass and used the rest to poach a pork roast. Seriously, it was nice. A bay leaf and a little rosemary, garlic and onions in the gravy. Try it.
