rob6239 (25), Ontario, Canada Mar 1, 2008 I enjoyed the aroma and initial smoky aroma but I agree that it doesn’t last. I found it curious that there was little carbonation and almost no head on the beer. I enjoyed this and will have it again. JaPe (69), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Nov 24, 2007 No head. Coke color.Weak carbonation. Nice flavor it’s real easy to drink. Classic stout flavor - not over the top. mgermani (862), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Dec 31, 2007 Pours a brownish black with a brief head and a nice smoky aroma. Nothing too pungent, not a rauchbier by any stretch. Tastes stout-like, with just a hint of woodsy smoke. Body is thick but not exactly creamy. Nice smoky finish. Decent stout, I could have done with a bit more oatmeal though. gilvanblight (390), Windsor, Ontario, Canada Dec 28, 2007 Immediately noticed a distinct lack of head. Deeply syrupy brown pour. Very caramelly scent. Lots of toffee and coffee. Definite smoke flavor. A hint of licorice and roasted nuts in the aftertaste. Waterier then expected. A nice thick smoked taste but I have had much more complex and better stouts. Near the finish noticed how under carbonated this beer is.
GregClow (2493), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Aug 19, 2007 Updated: Nov 22, 2007Re-rate: Bottle from the LCBO. Still looks the same. Much nicer aroma than the first time I tried it - roasted malt, coffee, chocolate, and smoke that starts mild but builds as it warms. Body is still thin, but with a bit more heft than before. Nice flavour - sweet malt with a hint of molasses, and smokiness coming through in the finish, becoming quite prominent towards the end of the glass. Either this has improved greatly since the first batch, or I was way off with my original assessment. It still needs a lot more body to be a really solid stout, but the aroma and flavour are quite a bit better.
Original: Bottle sample at the 2007 GTAs. Dark ruby-brown colour with a fairly still body. Light aroma of faintly roasted malt and not much else. Very thin body, especially for the style. Mild flavour - sweet, vaguely malty, a hint of raisin. If they called this a Nut Brown, I’d consider it a passable if unexciting version - but as a supposed oatmeal stout, it’s a failure in pretty much all regards. In the words of G.O.B. - "COME ON!!!" [4/3/4/2/8] jerc (3861), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Aug 19, 2007 2007 Golden Tap Awards. Very dark brown body, small ring of white head. Muted aroma of lightly acrid roast and lightly burnt malt. Touch of malt sweetness. Flavour has light notes of the lightly acidic roast of the aroma. Tang malt flavour, quick notes of dark caramel. Average to medium palate is a touch under carbonated. Not unpleasant, but a touch muted and not particularly stouty. jason (1620), Easton, Pennsylvania, USA Dec 18, 2007 Bottle. Thanks to radiomgb for sending me this one. Pours a thick black body with thin head. aroma is smokey, lightly sour, light choclate. Taste is smokey, bitter chocolate, roast. Looks like I may be one of the few that enjoyed it. tupalev (2605), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Oct 22, 2007 Bottle, LCBO. Black with red hues, decent sized tannish head. Decent aroma - dry malt, maybe a whiff of smoke. Taste is ok as well - body is way too thin, but the roast and sweetness here mix well. Drinkable, rather bland but not infected!
